MINNEAPOLIS -- Jared Rice (FY, Kalispell, Mont./Glacier HS) scored the lone goal of the game with 56 seconds left in regulation time, giving Concordia College-Moorhead a 1-0 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Rice took a feed from Patrick Rundlett (SO, Bozeman, Mont.) on a downfield sprint, then deposited the ball to the right corner of the goal from the top of the box in the final minute of play for the Cobbers (7-6-0 overall, 4-3-0 MIAC).
"Same story, different opponent," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "I think there must have been something I did some time ago that is coming back to haunt this team. We were entirely better tonight. Not to discredit Concordia and their result, but we beat them in all but one category -- the one that ultimately matters. On top of that, we had a great goal scored that was taken away by the referee."
Augsburg (5-5-1 overall, 1-4-0 MIAC) controlled the action for most of the contest, dominating in nearly every statistical category, but was unable to put the ball in the net. Augsburg had 20 shots to Concordia's six and had 14 corner kicks to Concordia's one, while controlling the run of play throughout the game.
"The quality of our effort has been fantastic, the quality of our play has been tremendous, however the quality of our finishing has been below average. We clearly know how important that is," Holker said.
Chad Gilmer (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and
Ahmed Gobana (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) had three shots each to lead the Auggies, while Marco Riboli (JR, Bergamo, Italy) had two shots for the Cobbers.
In goal, Concordia's Mads Schmidt (SR, Rodding, Denmark) had seven saves, while Augsburg's
Pascaul Venter (SR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had four saves.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (10/14) at 3:30 p.m. with a match at Bethel in Arden Hills, Minn.
"When you out-shoot your opponent and create as many dangerous chances as we did inside six yards, you expect to come away with a result," Holker said. "It's frustrating on that end, but I am absolutely proud of the boys and their effort and the type of soccer we are playing. We will not give up -- I can guarantee that. We are all committed to improving everything we do in every day of our lives, and these are simply obstacles that, in the end, will make us stronger. I believe in these young men."
