NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Despite 10 kills from
Katie Christensen (JR, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) the Augsburg volleyball team had a tough afternoon offensively and fell to a good St. Olaf team today in Northfield 3-0. Set scores were 25-22, 25-18, 25-19.
The first set began very evenly matched with the score being tied nine times. The two teams found themselves deadlocked at 20-20 before St. Olaf was capitalize offensively down the stretch and hang on for the 25-22 win over the Auggies.
In the second set, Augsburg was down 16-9 before setter
Shanna Reed (SR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) rattled off seven consecutive serves and brought the Auggies within two at 16-14. That was as close as the Auggies were able to get as St. Olaf pulled away for a 25-18 second set victory.
In the final set of the afternoon, Augsburg stuck with St. Olaf to a 10-10 tie but was not able to keep up with the St. Olaf offense as they went on to win the third set 25-19.
For the match, Augsburg was led by Christensen with 10 kills and
Amanda Unze (FY, Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska HS) with eight.
Barbara Simmons (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and
Korri Yule (JR, Medford, Minn.) both finished with four blocks for the Auggies, while
Dani Tanaka (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) led Augsburg with 13 digs.
St. Olaf was led offensively by Kim Smisek, who led all players with 16 kills. Alyssa Williams led the Oles with 19 digs, while Kelly Prunty recorded 33 assists.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (10/13) when it travels to St. Bonifacius, Minn. to take part in the Crown College Triangular. The Auggies will compete against Crown College and
Northwestern College (Minn.).
