Auggies edged by Gustavus 1-0

BOXSCORE

ST. PETER, Minn. -- Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff contender Gustavus Adolphus College scored a goal midway through the first half, which proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over visiting Augsburg College in men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Gustavus.

Despite holding an eight-six advantage in corner kicks, Augsburg (8-8-1 overall, 3-7-0 MIAC) was outshot by Gustavus (9-6-3 overall, 6-3-1 MIAC) by an 11-4 margin on the afternoon in the final regular-season game for both teams.

Recording shots on goal for the Auggies were #D.J. Wendell# (SR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) and Van Hong (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park HS), while Alex Hildebrandt (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and Chad Gilmer (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) also had shots.

Gustavus scored in the 30th minute, as Mark Adams scored from Stefan Kolis. Pascaul Venter (SR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had five saves in goal for Augsburg, while Luke Strom had two saves for the Gusties.

Augsburg graduates nine seniors from the program, a part of one of the most successful four-year runs for the squad in program history. As a group, the seniors reached the MIAC postseason playoffs twice and earned the school's first-ever trip to the NCAA Division III national playoffs last year.

"I want to thank the nine seniors for their contributions over the past four years," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "They have raised the standard for the type of soccer we expect to play and the type of people we aspire to be. Through this season's struggles, these men continued to push each and every member of our program every day. They never quit. They never let difficult circumstances tear them apart. They simply recognized this as another one of life's many challenges that are meant to improve us as people. I couldn't be prouder of their quality as people and as ambassadors for the college.

"Their impact will be felt for many years and we look forward to rewarding their sacrifices with stronger results in the future."
