COON RAPIDS, Minn. --
Joel Kociemba (JR, Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) finished just two strokes away from earning All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors with a 13th-place finish, leading the Augsburg College men's golf team at the MIAC Championships, held Saturday to Monday at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
Kociemba finished with a three-day total of 228 (79-77-72), a personal-best for a collegiate 54-hole event. His final-round 72 -- tied for the third-lowest round among the 50 golfers at the conference meet -- is also a personal-best for a collegiate round.
As a team, Augsburg finished eighth in the 10-team meet with a 954 (323-324-307) total, with its 307 final day score finishing as the second-lowest team round shot this fall. Augsburg is one of the youngest squads in the MIAC this season, with no seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and five first-year students on its 13-golfer roster.
Zach Johnson (FY, Sartell, Minn.), competing in his first conference meet, finished tied for 32nd with a 240 (81-80-79) total, while
Brian Deuel (SO, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) finished tied for 34th with a 241 (83-81-77) total, a personal-best for a collegiate 54-hole event.
Matt Kowalski (FY, Marinette, Wis.) -- competing in his first varsity meet of the season -- finished in a tie for 42nd with a 250 (80-86-84) total, while
Jason Henning (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) finished in a tie for 46th with a 253 (85-89-79) total.
Augsburg finishes the fall half of the 2009-10 season at the Gustavus Adolphus College Twin Cities Classic, held next Saturday (10/10) at the Elk River Country Club in Elk River, Minn., next Sunday (10/11) at the Links at Northfork in Ramsey, Minn., and next Monday (10/12) at the Wayzata Country Club in Wayzata, Minn.
