COON RAPIDS, Minn. --
Stefani Zappa (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry HS) became just the third Augsburg College women's golfer to ever earn All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors, finishing eighth to lead the Auggies to a seventh-place team finish at the MIAC Championships, held Saturday to Monday at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
Zappa's eighth-place individual finish is the best ever for an Auggie women's golfer at the conference meet. She joined Andrea Sievert, who finished ninth at the 1998 MIAC meet, and teammate
Johanna Frykmark (JR, Taby, Sweden/Rollingby Gymnasium HS), who finished 10th at the 2007 conference meet, as the only All-MIAC finishers (top 10 plus ties) in the 16-year history of Augsburg's women's golf program.
Zappa finished with a three-day total of 250 (86-86-78), setting a school record for best score in a 54-hole event. Her final-round 78 -- one of just five rounds in the 70s on Monday and one of just 10 rounds in the 70s overall by the 50 golfers in the tournament -- also is one of just five rounds ever shot in the 70s by an Augsburg women's golfer in program history. Her 78 is tied for the third-lowest round in school history; the record, 72, was shot by Marisa Navarro in a 2005 meet.
As a team, Augsburg also reached several milestones at the conference meet, finishing in seventh place with a 1,092 (370-363-359) total. The 1,092 total is the best-ever team finish for Augsburg at a 54-hole event (the MIAC Championships went to a 54-hole format in 2006), and the final-round 359 is the 10th-best single round in program history, and the team's best single round since the 2004-05 season. Augsburg's seventh-place finish out of 10 teams competing -- a three-place improvement from last year's finish -- is also tied for its best-ever conference meet finish; the Auggies finished seventh out of eight teams in the 1997 conference meet.
Frykmark also had a strong finish for the Auggies at the conference meet, finishing with a 261 (90-84-87) total to tie for 16th.
Kelsey Corrick (JR, Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) set a personal-best for a 54-hole event with a 287 (94-97-96) score, finishing 38th.
Jill Ferguson (FY, Batavia, Ill.) had a collegiate-best 96 in her second round and finished 41st with a 294 (100-96-98) score.
Megan Dale (SR, Northfield, Minn.) finished in 46th with a 314 (105-99-110) total, with her second-round 99 tying her collegiate-best.
As a team, Augsburg finished the fall half of the 2009-10 season with a 374.3 team stroke average, so far the third-best team stroke average in school history, behind the 2004-05 (364.9) and 2003-04 (370.8) seasons. Augsburg resumes play in the spring half of the season.
