Auggies tripped by Cobbers 4-1

BOXSCORE

MINNEAPOLIS -- Sam Johnson (JR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) and Sarah Rounds (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had a goal and assist apiece, as Concordia College-Moorhead pulled away in the second half for a 4-1 win over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field.

Courtney Barthel (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored the lone goal for Augsburg (3-5-4 overall, 1-4-1 MIAC) in the 25th minute, assisted by Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS).

Concordia (12-0-0 overall, 7-0-0 MIAC), ranked No. 14 in the latest National Soccer Coaches of America Division III national poll, pulled away from a 1-1 halftime tie with three goals, outshooting the Auggies 10-4 in the second stanza en route to a 18-9 shots advantage in the game.

"We made a few mistakes tonight and Concordia capitalized on each one," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "The run of play was pretty even, but obviously not the scoreboard. It's tough because we are definitely playing good soccer, but at the end of the day (we're) still committing costly errors and not getting the results."

The Cobbers opened the scoring in the 25th minute, as Johnson scored from Rounds on a pass off the defense and a sprint to the net. But Augsburg tied the game just 26 seconds later, as Barthel took a cross from Dorale off of the goalkeeper and put the shot in the goal.

In the second half, Concordia's Kelsey Swagger (SO, Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) scored an unassisted goal in the 47th minute, Rounds scored from Killashandra Link (FY, Fort Calhoun, Neb./Marian HS) and Johnson in the 68th minute, and Brittany Mayer (JR, Bismarck, N.D./Century HS) scored from Abby Habein (JR, Billings, Mont./Billings Senior HS) and Link in the 72nd minute.

Diana Bocklund (FY, Mahtomedi, Minn.) had five saves in goal for the Auggies, while Ali Nelson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) had four saves for the Cobbers.

For Augsburg, Barthel and Lacey Hoover (JR, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) had three shots apiece. Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), Courtney Gamrath (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) and Kelsey Sorensen (FY, Eden Prairie, Minn.) also had shots for the Auggies.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (10/13) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Bethel at Edor Nelson Field.

"Although we are not having the season we anticipated, I still believe in this team and I am confident that we will do well in our upcoming games," Navarre said. "We have to be ready on Tuesday. Bethel is a much better team this year and have been pushing the best teams in the conference to their limit."
