COMPLETE BRACKETS

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College claimed four champions, including three in Gold division competition, and 26 placewinners at its season-opening event, the Auggie-Brute-Adidas Open on Saturday at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg's top-ranked individual wrestlers, 197-pounder Jared Massey (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) and 157-pounder Jason Adams (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.), won their weight classes, along with Tony Valek (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) at 149.

Massey, the defending NCAA Division III national champion at 197, claimed two victories over Division III national tournament qualifiers from a year ago en route to his title. He pinned Nick Shandri of Division II Upper Iowa, a national qualifier at Wartburg (Iowa) last season, in 2:24 in the semifinals, then topped Andy Moore of Wisconsin-La Crosse, currently ranked No. 3 in the Division III national rankings, 4-0 in the championship match.

Adams, a two-time All-American for the Auggies, opened his season with a flourish, with a pin, technical fall and 12-2 major-decision among his four victories on Saturday. In the finals, Adams topped Upper Iowa's Derek Stolarzyk 4-1.

Valek, who qualified for the national tournament last season at 141 and entered this season ranked No. 4 at 141, moved up to 149 pounds and won all four of his matches to claim the title, including a 5-3 triumph over defending 149-pound national champion Matt Mauseth of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the finals. Mauseth entered this season ranked No. 1 nationally at 149.

Augsburg had three runners-up in Gold division competition, with Josh Roberts (FY, Grand Forks, N.D./Central HS) going 3-1 at 125, Jake Saatzer (JR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) going 3-1 at 141 and Zach Molitor (JR, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) going 3-1 at 174.

Saatzer's lone loss came to Jordan Harer of Dakota Wesleyan, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA in his weight class, in the championship match. Molitor, ranked No. 3 nationally at 174, had two pins in his first three matches before falling in the title bout to Glenn Rhees of Grand View (Iowa), the No. 4-ranked wrestler in the NAIA rankings.

Paul Bjorkstrand (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) placed third for the Auggies in the 133-pound Gold division, as did Cody Hansen (FY, Albert Lea, Minn.) at 141 and Orlando Ponce (JR, Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah-Miami Lakes HS) at 165. Andy Witzel (SR, Fulda, Minn.) and Nick Creamier (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) shared third-place honors at heavyweight. Caleb Lines (FY, Jackson, Minn./Jackson County Central HS) placed fourth at 184.

In Silver division action, Dusty Holmes (SO, West Fargo, N.D.) claimed the title for the Auggies at 133 pounds.

Saturday's event was an early battle of the top two teams in the Division III national rankings. Augsburg, the No. 2-ranked team, had three titlists and placewinners in the top three in nine of 10 weight classes in Gold division action, while Wisconsin-La Crosse, the top-ranked team, had one champion in Gold division brackets and top-three finishers in four weight classes.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (11/25) at 7 p.m., hosting Augustana (S.D.) at Si Melby Hall.
