Shanna Reed (SR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball squad, while middle hitter
Barbara Simmons (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), earned All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors, it was announced today by the conference office.
Reed finished the season with a team-high 1,026 assists, to go along with 47 aces, 265 digs and 31 kills. In her four years at Augsburg, Reed has 3,251 assists and ranks second all-time on the school's career record list. Reed also has 168 career service aces to her credit and is tied for second in school history in that category.
This season, Reed finished with ten assist-dig double-doubles, including three in her last five matches. She posted a career-high 60 assists against Northwestern and career-high 24 digs against Bethel. She also earned MIAC Setter of the Week honors on Oct. 20, after averaging 11.0 assists per-set and 2.8 digs per-set in wins over Northwestern and No. 18-ranked Concordia-Moorhead.
Simmons was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, a part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. Simmons finished this season with a team-leading 113 blocks (23 solo), while being second on the team in kills with 270. Simmons graduates as the Augsburg career school record holder in total blocks (268) and block assists (220).
Under fifth-year head coach Jessica Rinehart, Augsburg concluded the 2009 season with one of its most successful seasons in school history. The Auggies finished with a 17-14 overall record (6-5 MIAC) and finished in a tie for fourth place in the MIAC regular-season standings, the team's best finish since 1985 when they tied for third. The Auggies also qualified for the MIAC postseason playoffs for the first time in school history since the conference moved to the current six-team format in 2001.
