David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) led Augsburg with 18 points and five assists as the Auggies broke open a tight game midway through the first half and went on to a 91-63 win over George Fox University in a nonconference men's basketball game Monday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (6-2 overall) was led by Olson's 18 points, which included a 3-for-5 performance from behind the arc. Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies was
Cory Polta (SO, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) and
Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.), who had 12 and 11 points respectively.
Ben Flavin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) finished with nine points and a season-high six assists.
George Fox (3-5 overall) was led by the duo of Alex Stockner and Stephen Wiseley. Stockner posted 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds while Wiseley had a team-high 13 points and four assists.
The first 10 minutes of the first have were very close as neither team could put together much of a run. Augsburg then hit seven straight shots and eight of ten to break the game open.
Anthony Humphrey (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) hit a three and a jumper to cap an 8-0 run that made it 24-16 with 7:58 left, and the Auggies stretched the margin to 15 points at 40-25 with 2:19 remaining on a fast break jumper by Olson.
Augsburg maintained a comfortable lead and continued its hot shooting in the second half, leading by as many as 33 points in the final four minutes. Sixteen Auggies saw action in the contest with 13 players getting into the scoring column.
For the game, Augsburg shot 56.5 percent (35-of-62) from the field, while the Bruins hit 38.2 percent (21-of-55). The two teams were deadlocked on the boards 35-35 but the big difference in the game came down to bench scoring and points in the pain. The Augsburg bench outscored the George Fox reserves 37-17 and the Auggies outscored the Bruins 40-10 in the paint. The Auggies also forced 18 George Fox turnovers, while only committing nine.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/2) at 3 p.m. when it travels to Northfield to take on MIAC rival St. Olaf College in a men's and women's double-header.
