Serenae Levine (SO, Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Tracee Schrank (FY, Reedsburg, Wis./Reedsburg Area HS) each had 12 points for Augsburg but it wasn't enough as the Auggies fell 82-47 to Warburg College, in the opening round of the 2009 AmericInn Holiday Classic.
Levine and Schrank were both bright spots for Augsburg (1-5 overall) on a tough day for the Auggies. Levine led Augsburg with 12 points and eight rebounds, connecting on 5-of-11 from the field. Schrank also finished with 12 points and added five rebounds, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor.
Wartburg (6-4 overall) was led by four players in double figures, including a 23-point performance from Samantha Harrington. Abbey Hempen led the Knights on the boards, pulling down eight rebounds and adding 10 points.
The Knights started the game with a 21-8 run over the first nine and a half minutes of play and would never look back as Augsburg struggled to find its offensive rhythm. For the contest, Augsburg shot a season-high 37.7 percent (20-of-53) but also committed a season-high 33 turnovers. The Auggies were able to outscore the Knights in the paint 28-24 but were only able to convert on 5-of-19 from the free throw line.
Augsburg and UW-Platteville begin the final day of play at 1 p.m. in the consolation game, while Wartburg will face St. Norbert College of De Pere, Wis., in the championship game at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30.
