OMAHA, Neb. (1/23/09) -- In a battle of the top-ranked teams in the NCAA Division II and III national rankings, the Division II University of Nebraska-Omaha claimed a 28-9 dual meet victory over Division III Augsburg College on Friday night at UNO's Sapp Fieldhouse. The loss snapped a six-match dual meet win streak for the Auggies (7-2 in dual meets), which included triumphs over No. 2-ranked rival Wartburg, Division I North Dakota State and Division II Augustana (S.D.).
UNO (6-0 in dual meets) was able to claim wins in seven of the 10 bouts on the night, including close results at heavyweight and 149 pounds. UNO started the evening with three straight major decisions, jumping out to a 12-0 lead. Augsburg's No. 2-ranked Jared Massey (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) got the Auggies on the board with a hard-fought 7-2 win over No. 4-ranked Jacob Marrs to cut the Maverick lead to 12-3. In the closest match of the evening at heavyweight, UNO's No. 4-ranked Tony Lewis used an early takedown to set up a 3-2 win over Augsburg's No. 4-ranked Andy Witzel (JR, Fulda, Minn.) which extended the UNO lead to 15-3.
After the intermission, the Auggies came out and claimed a key victory when No. 5-ranked Seth Flodeen (SR, Cannon Falls, Minn.) claimed a 5-2 decision over UNO's Matt Rein. Flodeen used an early takedown and just over four straight minutes of riding time to wear down his opponent and cut the UNO advantage to 15-6.
In the 133 pound match, UNO's No. 2-ranked Cody Garcia scored the only pin of the evening, defeating Augsburg's Alex Johnson (FY, Foxhome, Minn./Breckenridge HS) with a fall in 2:52. The next match proved to be a reversal showcase, with Augsburg's No. 7-ranked Tony Valek (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) coming out on top in a 15-10 decision.
At 149, UNO's No. 4-ranked Esai Dominguez used a key takedown with 20 seconds left in the match to defeat Augsburg's No. 1-ranked and previously unbeaten Willy Holst (SR, Prescott, Wis.). UNO sealed the final victory of the night when two-time national champion and No. 1-ranked Todd Meneely posted a 14-5 decision over Augsburg's Jason Adams (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.).
Augsburg returns to action on Sunday (1/25) at 2 p.m., when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, ranked No. 11 in Division III, at Si Melby Hall in Minneapolis.
