TEXAS-TYLER DUAL MEET RESULTS
DALLAS, Texas -- In its first competitions of the spring half of the 2008-09 season, the Augsburg College men's golf team split a pair of dual meets against nationally-ranked teams in Texas, falling to the University of Texas-Tyler on Wednesday and picking up a match-play dual win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday.
Against UMHB, the Auggies shot 303 as a team -- tying a season-best team score for an 18-hole round -- and won three of the five matches at the meet, held at the Cimarron Hills Golf Club (designed by Jack Nicklaus). UMHB is currently ranked No. 20 in the latest
Golf World/Nike Golf Division III national poll by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Brian Deuel (FY, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and
Joel Kociemba (SO, Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) led the way for the Auggies, each shooting rounds of 75.
Jason Henning (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) shot 76,
Colby Anderson (SR, Luverne, Minn.) shot 77 and
Tony Vanyo (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) shot 78 for the Auggies.
"This was a big win for our team's confidence, and I am very happy to see the whole team shoot in the 70s," said Augsburg head coach Ted Vickerman.
In the match against Texas-Tyler, the Auggies lost 292-326 in the dual, played at the Hurricane Creek Country Club in McKinney, Texas. Texas-Tyler is currently ranked No. 8 in the Division III national poll. The University of Texas-Dallas, ranked No. 19 nationally, also competed at the meet, but as an exhibition team.
Kociemba led the Auggies against Texas-Tyler, shooting an 80. Anderson and Vanyo shot scores of 81, while Henning and Deuel shot 84 apiece.
"The team has been working hard to improve their golf swings in the dome and showed lots of improvement under pressure. It is difficult to score well early in the season when the players have only played twice outside in the past six months," Vickerman said. "This was a good test and our team showed lots of potential. I am very happy with the progress our team showed, and I am confident that our team will shoot lower scores as the spring goes on."
Augsburg has its first Midwest meet of the spring season next Friday and Saturday (3/27-28), with competition at the Central (Iowa) Dutch Classic in Pella, Iowa.
