PELLA, Iowa -- With four golfers finishing in the top 10, the Augsburg College men's golf team claimed the title at the Central College Dutch Classic, an event shortened to one round on Friday at the Bos Landen Golf Resort.
Augsburg scored 313 on the afternoon, topping host Central by two strokes. Due to inclement weather, the event was shortened to a single-round event, with Saturday's second round cancelled.
"I have never seen our team more prepared than this spring," said Augsburg head coach Ted Vickerman. "They are hitting the ball on the center of the club every time and are starting to learn how to minimize mistakes. This is our first victory of the season, and it feels oh, so good!"
Colby Anderson (SR, Luverne, Minn.) led the way for the Auggies with a 76 total, tying for medalist honors with two other players (Central's Will Overlander earned medalist honors on a playoff).
"I started strong. Every bad shot I hit, I put myself in a good position on the next hole," Anderson said. "On the first hole, par 5 into the wind, I ended up way right of the green in two shots. I hit my third up over a 40-foot tree to a tap in birdie. Later on, I hit my approach on the par 3 12th out of bounds, then settled myself and birded the next hole. Thats the story."
Jason Henning (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) shot a 78 to tie for fifth, while
Tony Vanyo (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) shot 79 to tie for eighth and
Brian Deuel (FY, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) shot 80 to place 10th.
Joel Kociemba (SO, Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) placed 27th with an 84 total.
Matt Bendzick (FY, Chaska, Minn.) and
Tucker Williams (FY, Roseville, Minn.) competed as individuals and shot scores of 81 and 89, respectively.
""My best shot of the round was on the fourth hole. I hit my tee shot behind a large oak tree. Then I hit a low curving stinger shot around the tree with my 4-ron and saved par," said Henning, who made par on seven straight holes after starting the round with two bogeys.
Augsburg competes at the Loras (Iowa) Spring Invitational on Sunday and Monday in Dubuque and Pesota, Iowa.
"The team has great chemistry and a strong desire to win," Vickerman said. "Teammates will help each other out in practice and motivate each other to become better. As a coach, that is all I can ask of them. They do the best they can each day to improve and get better."
