Wrestling 12/1/07 -- Augsburg at Minnesota State Moorhead Dragon Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. (12/1/07) -- Claiming six individual champions/co-champions, the Augsburg College wrestling team competed at the Minnesota State University, Moorhead Dragon Open on Saturday at Alex Nemzek Hall. Twenty-seven Auggies were among the nearly 250 wrestlers competing at the single-day open.

Seth Flodeen * (JR, Cannon Falls, Minn.), ranked No. 1 nationally at 125 pounds, claimed three victories to win his weight class (125 Red) on Saturday in his first action of the season. He opened the meet with a 16-0, technical-fall victory, and scored a 6-4 win over MSU Moorhead's Joe Werner in the finals.

Travis Lang (JR, Bismarck, N.D.) improved to 7-1 on the season with three wins to claim the title at 133 Red. He opened the meet with a first-period pin and a 6-0 decision win, then scored a 4-2 win over North Dakota State's Eric Hoffman (wrestling unattached on Saturday), who was ranked No. 18 in a Division I preseason national poll.

Brandon Klukow (JR, Albert Lea, Minn.) and Matt Curtis (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) shared the title at 165 Red for the Auggies. Klukow scored three wins, including a 6-3 triumph over Mike Quamme of North Dakota State in the semifinals, to improve to 7-2 on the season. Curtis scored two victories, including a 7-1 win over C.D. Johnson of Southwest Minnesota State, to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Beau Hansen (FY, Albert Lea, Minn.) and Spencer Flodeen (FY, Cannon Falls, Minn.) each scored three wins to share the title at 157 White for the Auggies.

Andy Witzel (SO, Fulda, Minn.) placed second at Heavyweight Red, claiming a decision win and a third-period pin before falling 3-2 to Tim Johnson, a MSU Moorhead wrestler competing unattached, in the finals.

Robbie Gotreau (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), ranked No. 2 nationally in Division III at 184 pounds, suffered his first loss of the season in the semifinals, but rallied back with two victories, including an 11-3 major-decision win, to take third place at 184 Red. Gotreau is now 9-1 on the season.

Jason Adams (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Lucas Murray (FY, Anoka, Minn.) shared third place at 141 Red, while Jaime Rocha (JR, Santa Maria, Calif./Righetti HS) took fourth at 125 Red and Kris Krier (SO, Woodbury, Minn.) placed fifth at 197 Red.

Augsburg was also scheduled to compete at the University of Northern Iowa Open on Sunday, but the event was cancelled due to weather. The Auggies return to action on Tuesday (12/4) at 7 p.m., with a dual meet at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn.
