Augsburg competes at St. Thomas and Carleton Meets

ST. THOMAS TOM-CAT TWILIGHT RESULTS | CARLETON RELAYS RESULTS

ST. PAUL/NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Augsburg men's track and field team claimed seven personal-best times/marks in competitions at St. Thomas and Carleton over the weekend. At Friday night's St. Thomas Tom-Cat Twilight, Brent Haglund (JR, Fridley, Minn.) claimed a victory in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:26.52, while 4x100 meter relay team led the Auggies on Saturday at the Carleton Relays with a first place finish in a time of 42.90.

At St. Thomas, the Auggies continued their strong season in the jumps. Nick Ward (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Shane Pantila (SO, St. Michael, Minn. / STMA HS) both recorded personal-best marks to finish third and fourth respectively in the long jump in a very competitive field. Ward recorded a distance of 6.94 meters (22-9 1/4), while Pantilla also broke the 22 foot barrier, recording a distance of 6.80 meters (22-3 3/4). These distances currently rank second and third on the MIAC performance lists. Also having a strong showing in the jumps was Emmanuel Marcellino (FY, Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial HS), who claimed a fifth place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 13.14 meters (43-1 1/2).

James Strand (JR, Pequot Lakes, Minn. / Brainerd HS) also recorded a personal-best time on Friday with a third place finish in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 55.86. In addition to his third place finish in the long jump, Ward also finished fourth in the 200 meters in 22.76.

On Saturday at Carleton, the 4x100 meter relay team of #D.J. Wendell# (SR, Princeton, Minn. / Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS), Strand, Rick Wolke (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Ward claimed top honors with 42.90 clocking. Four other Auggies recorded personal-best times in the meet. Leading the way was the duo of Ben Rodriguez (FY, Buffalo, Minn. / Buffalo HS) and Shane Wyborny (JR, Detroit Lakes, Minn. / Detriot Lakes HS), who finished second and fourth in the steeplechase in 9:55.74 and 10:03.82 respectively. Victor Sanchez (JR, Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest HS) finished third in the 10,000 meters in a personal-best 32:31.96, and Adam Horkey (JR, Windom, Minn. / Windom HS) recorded a personal-best 15.48 to finish third in the 110 meter hurdles.

Other top finishers for the Auggies were Seth Norberg (FY, Northfield, Minn. / Northfield HS) and Tor Sperling (SO, Rochester, Minn. / Century HS). Norberg claimed a fourth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.90 meters (19-4 1/4), while Sperling finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 12.34 meters (40-6). The Auggie 4x400 meter relay team of Joe Arnold (FY, Grand Rapids, Minn. / Grand Rapids HS), Strand, Wolke and Ward finished fifth with a season-best time of 3:24.95.

As a team, the Auggies finished sixth in the 13-team meet. The Augsburg men's track and field team returns to action on Wednesday (4/22) at the Macalester Twilight in St. Paul.
