ST. JOSEPH, Minn. -- Jennifer Castillo (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) went 5-for-9 with two doubles, five RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader, while Jessa Hinz (SO, Richfield, Minn.) went 4-for-8 with four RBI and two runs scored, as the Augsburg College softball team split a twinbill at the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
St. Benedict (12-16 overall, 8-8 MIAC) won the first game 10-9, but Augsburg (10-26 overall, 8-10 MIAC) won the second game 19-7. Augsburg has won four of its last five games and eight of its last 12 contests.
Augsburg pounded out 21 hits in the second game, as six Auggies had multiple-hit efforts. Castillo went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored, while Hinz went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run. Amanda Schwartz (FY, Becker, Minn.) and Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) had three hits and a double each, with Schwartz driving in four runs and Magnuson scoring three.
Kylee Persing (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) hit a three-run homer as part of an eight-run seventh inning, as the Auggies blew the game open. Schwartz had a three-run double in the seventh inning as well. Persing picked up the pitching victory with 6.1 innings of work.
In the first game, Augsburg fell behind 7-1 after four innings, but rallied with eight runs in the last three innings to keep the game close. Magnuson, Castillo, Persing and Brittney Bruzek (SO, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) each drove in two runs for the Auggies, with Persing and Cassie Crego (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) each scoring twice.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (4/22) at 4 p.m. with a doubleheader at Carleton.
