NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Jessa Hinz (SO, Richfield, Minn.) hit a grand-slam home run in the third inning of the second game, capping the scoring as the Augsburg College softball team claimed a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Carleton College on Wednesday afternoon at Bell Field.

Augsburg (11-27 overall, 9-11 MIAC) claimed a 12-2 win in the second game, shortened to five innings due to the NCAA's eight-run rule. In the first game, Carleton (4-27 overall, 3-17 MIAC) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to score a 3-2 win over the Auggies in the first game.

Augsburg sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run first inning, taking advantage of six runs and an error. Laura Strandell (SO, Pine Island, Minn.) had a two-run single and Jennifer Castillo (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had a run-scoring double to highlight the inning.

The Auggies added another run in the second inning, and Hinz's grand slam, her second homer of the season, capped the scoring for the Auggies.

Melissa Larsen (JR, Andover, Minn.) pitched 4.1 innings, allowing just four hits while recording a strikeout, to pick up the win in the second game, with Sarah Green (SR, Winnebago, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) finishing the fifth inning in relief.

In the first game, Augsburg scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead, with both runs coming across following a fielding error. But Carleton claimed the win in the seventh inning, as a two-out, two-run single by Hannah Maras gave the Knights the win.

Four pitchers saw action in the game for the Auggies, with starter Kylee Persing (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) striking out three in 2.2 innings of work, and Amanda Schwartz (FY, Becker, Minn.) striking out six in 3.2 innings of relief.

Augsburg closes its regular season on Saturday (4/25) at 1 p.m., hosting Bethel at Edor Nelson Field.
