Ward and Strand set personal-best marks

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Nick Ward (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and James Strand (JR, Pequot Lakes, Minn. / Brainerd HS) both recorded top three finishes as the Augsburg men's track and field team recorded a seventh place finish at the Macalester College Bolstorff Twilight on Wednesday night in St. Paul.

Both Ward and Strand tied or set personal-best marks with their performances at Macalester. Ward claimed a second place finish in the 100 meter dash tying his personal-best with a time of 10.97 seconds, which currently ranks second in the MIAC and added a  third place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.67 meters (21-10 3/4). Strand set a personal-best time in the 400 meter hurdles with a 55.50 clocking, finishing only behind two runners from the University of Minnesota.

The Augsburg 4x400 meter relay team also had an solid day, posting a second place finish with a time of 3:22.08. The relay team of Rick Wolke (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn.), Joe Arnold (FY, Grand Rapids, Minn. / Grand Rapids HS), Ward and Strand ran more than two seconds faster than their seed time.

The Auggies continued to preform well in the jumps. In addition to Ward's third place finish in the long jump, Augsburg placed four more long jumpers in the top 15. DeAndre Dennis (FY, Minneapolis, Minn. / Washburn HS) tied for eighth with a jump of 6.21 meters (20-4 1/2), followed by teammates Emmanuel Marcellino (FY, Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial HS), Seth Norberg (FY, Northfield, Minn. / Northfield HS) and Tor Sperling (SO, Rochester, Minn. / Century HS), who finished 10th, 11th and 15th. The Auggies also boasted three top-10 triple jumpers. Leading the way was Shane Pantila (SO, St. Michael, Minn. / STMA HS) with a fourth place finish, recording a distance of 13.10 meters (42-11 3/4). Marcellino and Sperling claimed eighth and ninth places respectively.

Other top performers for the Auggies included Arnold with a 10th place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.07; Wolke with a 11th place finish in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 11.36 seconds and David Nestrud (JR, Braham, Minn. / Braham HS), who finished 12th in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 16.53 seconds.

As a team, the Auggies finished seventh out of 18 teams with a total of 34.50 points. Augsburg returns to action on Friday (5/1) at the Hamline University Meet of the UnSaintly in St. Paul, Minn.
