Auggie women's golf wins triangular

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Johanna Frykmark (SO, Stockholm, Sweden/Rollingby Gymnasium HS) shot a career-best 4-over-par 76 to earn medalist honors, leading the Augsburg College women's golf team to one of its best-ever team finishes, winning the three-team Macalester Spring Extravaganza on Saturday at the Highland Park Golf Course.

As a team, Augsburg shot a single-round total of 366 -- its best round since the 2004-05 campaign -- to win the three-team meet. Bethel shot a 368 to finish second, and Macalester shot 369 to finish third. It was the final meet of the 2008-09 season for the Auggies.

"I'm very excited about our win today," said Augsburg head coach Laura Patrick. "Winning the Macalester Spring Extravaganza was a great way to end the season, especially after beating Concordia in the St. Thomas Invitational last week. Today, each of the players shot equal to or better than their average and three players shattered their career bests. Each player worked very hard this season to improve her game. The team has been consistently improving and today's event was a testament to all of their hard work. I'm very proud to coach each of these girls and proud of their play today. I believe that this spring's successes are a sign of what's to come for the Auggies!"

Frykmark shot just the fourth round in the 70s in the history of the Augsburg women's golf program and the second-best round in school history. Marisa Navarro holds the school single-round record with a 72 shot in a 2005 meet. Frykmark's previous career-best round was 81.

"Johanna Frykmark had a career-best 76 after making grip and swing changes to accommodate a chronic thumb injury that has been plaguing her since last spring. Her 76 was not only an Augsburg career best, but also a personal best," Patrick said. "Johanna competed extensively as a junior golfer in Sweden, and for her to score a personal best while playing for the Auggies is very exciting. Considering that she was able to accomplish this after battling injuries and swing changes makes the win even more exhilarating."

Stefani Zappa (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry HS) shot 89 to place fifth in the 15-player field, while Kelsey Corrick (SO, Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) took four strokes off her previous career-best with a 92 total to tie for sixth. Jenna Marquardt shot a career-best 109, and Megan Dale finished with a 111 total.
