Auggies split with Carleton

GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Behind a career-high-tying 12 strikeouts by Sam Weber (JR, Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) in the first game, the Augsburg College baseball team claimed a split with host Carleton College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Mel Taube Field.

Behind the 12-strikeout, two-hit shutout by Weber, Augsburg (11-10 overall, 3-1 MIAC) won the first game 3-0. Carleton (7-13 overall, 1-3) rallied to win the second game 7-6.

Walking just two hitters in the game, Weber had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the sixth inning, when he surrendered his only two hits of the game in back-to-back fashion. Over the final four innings of play, eight of the 10 outs Weber gained came by strikeout.

The 12-strikeout effort is just the third time an Augsburg pitcher has had 10 strikeouts or more in the last decade. Weber also had 12 strikeouts in a game against Wisconsin-Stout in 2008, and Evan Almeroth threw 11 strikeouts in a 2006 game against Macalester. Augsburg's single-game record for strikeouts is 15, set by Chris Gleason in a 1978 game against St. Mary's.

Augsburg scored all three of its runs in the first inning, as Brent Kolbow (FY, Forest Lake, Minn.) and Mason Holmquist (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) opened the game with singles, and came home on a triple by Craig Henry (JR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS). Henry later scored on a single by Joe Pierce (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.). Augsburg recorded five hits in the first inning, but could manage just two hits thereafter, as Carleton pitcher Ethan Guevin recorded four strikeouts against no walks and a hit batter.

In the second game, Augsburg rallied from a 5-4 deficit with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, both runs coming across after a fielding error. But Carleton scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the win, with the winning run coming across on a sacrifice fly by Guevin.

Pierce went 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead the Auggies in the second game, scoring twice. Henry and Eric Olson (JR, New Prague, Minn.) had two hits each for the Auggies.

Alex Glasenapp (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) struck out four while walking one for Augsburg, with just one of the five runs charged to him being earned.

Russ Fujisawa went 3-for-4 with two doubles for Carleton, while Alex Wirta and Erik Fabry had two hits apiece.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play with a rescheduled doubleheader against Hamline on Monday (4/6) at 2:30 p.m. at Parade Stadium.
