Vanyo's 73 leads Auggies to win

HAM LAKE, Minn. -- Tony Vanyo (SR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) shot a 1-over-par 73 to earn medalist honors, while teammate Alex Umland (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) eagled his final hole to close out his round with a third-place 77, leading the Augsburg College men's golf team to a season-ending victory at the Augsburg Majestic Spring Invitational on Friday at the Majestic Oaks Golf Course.

Playing on his home course, Vanyo collected four birdies in his round to win the single-round tournament by three strokes over Nick Santrach of Macalester, who shot 76. Meanwhile, closing his shotgun-start round on a par-5, 532-yard 16th hole, Umland claimed an eagle-3, one of 13 par-or-better holes for him in his 5-over-par 77.

As a team, Augsburg's top team finished first in the three-school, six-team meet with a 308 total, with Bethel finishing second with a 316 total and St. Thomas finishing third with a 320 total. Augsburg's No. 2 team finished fifth with a 346 total. Macalester completed with two individuals and did not record a team score.

Four Auggies finished among the top 10 individuals. Colby Anderson (SR, Luverne, Minn.) and Brian Deuel (FY, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) tied for sixth place, each with 79 totals. Jason Henning (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) tied for 22nd with an 85 total. For the Augsburg No. 2 team, Joel Kociemba (SO, Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) led the way with an 82 total, followed by Matt Bendzick (FY, Chaska, Minn.) with 83, Tucker Williams (FY, Roseville, Minn.) with 87, Brett Wilday (SO, Littleton, Colo./Heritage HS) with 94 and Sam Ringstad (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) with 96.

Toby Robinson and Tony Weber tied for fourth place in the field for Bethel, each shooting 78 totals. For St. Thomas, Grant Shafranski led the way with a 79 total, tying for sixth place.

Augsburg finished its 2008-09 season with a 315.1 stroke average, with six Auggies recording season-long stroke averages of 82.0 or better. Vanyo finished with a team-best 76.0 stroke average, and remains in contention for an individual berth in the NCAA Division III national championships.
