MEN'S RESULTS
NORTHFIELD, Minn. --
Brent Haglund (JR, Fridley, Minn.) improved upon his school record and NCAA Division III national championships provisional qualifying time with a second-place finish in the 10,000-meter run, while
Nick Ward (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn.) set an NCAA provisional qualifying distance in the long jump with a second-place finish, leading the Augsburg College men's track and field team to an eighth-place finish at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor championships, held Friday and Saturday at Carleton College's Laird Stadium.
As a team, Augsburg placed eighth with 55.0 points, improving its point total by 17 from last season's finish. Augsburg had three All-MIAC (top three) individual finishes, to go along with four All-MIAC honorable-mention (fourth to sixth place) efforts.
Haglund took more than 17 seconds off of his previous school-record time, set earlier this season, in the 10,000 meters, finishing second in the conference meet with a 30:49.24 time. His time currently stands 27th-fastest among the 38 individuals
nationally who have recorded Division III championships provisional qualifying times, according to Raceberryjam.com. The championships automatic qualifying time is 30:20.00.
Meanwhile, Ward recorded a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying distance in the long jump, finishing second with a 7.02-meter (23-feet, 0.5-inches) effort. His distance, just one inch off the school record (23-feet-1.5, set by Dan Tangen in 1969), currently sits 25th among the 28 individuals nationally who have recorded provisional qualifying distances.
Ward also finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.08 seconds. He also has an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 10.74 seconds in the event, set earlier this season. The time is currently 23rd among the 39 individuals who have reached the provisional qualifying standard.
Shane Pantila (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had a solid all-around performance in field events for the Auggies at the MIAC meet, finishing second in the triple jump, fifth in the long jump and seventh in the hammer throw.
Pantila finished with a 13.89-meter (45-feet-7.0) effort in the triple jump, a 6.50-meter (21-feet-4.0) effort in the long jump and a 49.51-meter (162-feet-5.0) effort in the hammer throw, as the only MIAC athlete to place in the top nine in each of those three events.
Pantila led an Augsburg trio in the finals of the triple jump.
Emmanuel Marcellino (FY, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) placed fourth with a 13.45-meter (44-feet-1.5) distance, while
Seth Norberg (FY, Northfield, Minn.) placed seventh in 13.21 meters (43-feet-4.25).
Augsburg's 400-meter relay team of #D.J. Wendell# (SR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS),
James Strand (JR, Pequot Lakes, Minn./Brainerd HS),
Rick Wolke (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Ward placed second in the MIAC meet in a season-best 42.31 seconds.
Adam Horkey (JR, Windom, Minn.) just missed out on All-MIAC honorable-mention honors with a seventh-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best 15.47 seconds, while Strand placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (56.08 seconds). Augsburg's 1,600-meter relay squad of Ward,
Joe Arnold (FY, Grand Rapids, Minn.), Wolke and Strand placed eighth in a season-best 3:20.75.
Augsburg will compete at the Wisconsin-La Crosse Last Chance Meet on Thursday (5/14).
