ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/2/09) --
Nick Ward (SO, Coon Rapids, Minn. / Coon Rapids HS) led the Augsburg men's track and field team with a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 100-meter dash as the Auggies competed on Saturday at the Hamline University Meet of the UnSaintly. Ward's time of 10.74 seconds currently ranks first in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and breaks Matthew Shannon's school record time of 10.83 set in 2001 and 2003. In addition to his performance in the 100, Ward also claimed a second place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.68 meters and 13th place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.51.
The Auggies also continued their strong performances in the jumps, recording eight top-11 performances between the long jump and triple jump. Emanuel Marcellino (FY, Circle Pines, Minn. / Centennial HS),
Seth Norberg (FY, Northfield, Minn. / Northfield HS) and
Tor Sperling (SO, Rochester, Minn. / Century HS) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively in the triple jump, while Ward,
Shane Pantila (SO, St. Michael, Minn. / STMA HS), Marcellino, Norberg and Sperling claimed second, seventh, eighth, 10th and 11th respectively in the long jump.
The 400 meter relay team of
DeAndre Dennis (FY, Minneapolis, Minn. / Washburn HS),
James Strand (JR, Pequot Lakes, Minn. / Brainerd HS),
Rick Wolke (FY, Belle Plaine, Minn.), and Ward continued to perform well, recording a second place finish with a time of 42.89. Other top performances for the Auggies included a second place finish from
Shane Wyborny (JR, Detroit Lakes, Minn. / Detriot Lakes HS) in the 3,000-meter steeple chase in a season-best time of 9:56.46. In addition to his seventh place finish in the long jump, Pantila also posted a 10th place finish in the hammer throw, recording a mark of 46.23 meters.
