2009 SEASON PREVIEW

MINNEAPOLIS -- The 2009 season could aptly be described as a year of transition for the Augsburg College football program.

The Auggies will have to find replacements for two of the top passing threats in school history -- Gagliardi Trophy finalist quarterback Jordan Berg * and two-time All-American wide receiver Royce Winford *. The duo were among eight Auggie seniors last season who earned either all-conference or all-conference honorable-mention honors.

But the cupboard is not bare for the Auggies in 2009.

Head coach Frank Haege and his staff have brought to Augsburg what he describes as the best class of recruits and transfers in his five years as the Auggies' mentor -- a group that includes four all-state performers. A solid group of 48 returners, including 14 starters, are also back in the lineup.

“It's definitely a year of transition. We had our first recruiting class graduate from the program last year, and we had some really outstanding seniors in that group. They will be tough to replace,” Haege said. “It will be a challenge and we will have to have some guys step up. But we really have an excellent (recruiting) class. It's probably our best quality class since I've been here.”

The Auggies are aiming for continued improvement, after back-to-back years with finishes of 5-5 overall, 3-5 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The team's theme, “Taking the Next Step,” reflects its goal of moving up in the league standings.

Offense: New QB, talented receivers
One of the biggest question marks entering the season will be who will throw the ball in Augsburg's dynamic, pass-oriented offense, replacing Jordan Berg *, who set nearly every school record for passing in his three seasons.

It appears that the team may have found its solution in Marcus Brumm (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS), who transfers to the program after spending his initial campaign at Division II Minnesota State-Mankato. Brumm earned all-state honors in leading Lakeville South to the Prep Bowl in 2006, throwing for 2,168 yards and 27 touchdowns -- his second consecutive 2,000-yard passing season.

“We feel great having Marcus Brumm, who was arguably the best high school quarterback in the state three years ago,” Haege said. “He's a passer first, but he's an athletic pocket passer. He can run when he gets in trouble. He can add another dimension to our offense.”

Behind Brumm will be returners Tim Lund (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) and Tim Stepka (SO, New Prague, Minn.), along with newcomer Todd Garnhardt (FY, Jordan, Minn.). Garnhardt earned all-conference honors in his high school days.

The other big question facing the Auggie offense will be who will step into the No. 1 receiver spot to replace 2008 MIAC Most Valuable Player Royce Winford *. Two talented receivers return to the starting lineup -- senior Mike Nourie (SR, Nicollet, Minn.) and junior Muneer Al-Hameed (JR, Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS).

An All-MIAC second-team selection last season, Hameed caught 71 passes for 737 yards and four touchdowns as the Auggies' No. 2 receiver, and has 119 catches for 1,415 yards and nine touchdowns in his career. Nourie, an All-MIAC honorable-mention honoree the last two years, has 142 catches for 1,558 yards and 12 touchdowns in his three seasons.

Returners Joe Kloetzke (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy HS), Jack Christopherson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS), Tyler Phillips (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Emmanuel Marcellino (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) will add depth to the wide receiver position. Returners Josh Pronschinske (JR, Fountain City, Wis./Cochrane-Fountain City HS) and LeRoy Roby (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) will fill the tight end spot.

Also adding depth will be a group of talented newcomers, including Chris Osborn (FY, Eagan, Minn.) and Tyler Swanson (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS). Osborn was an all-state honorable-mention honoree last season, playing in the state all-star game. Swanson also earned all-state honorable-mention honors in 2008.

Other newcomers at wide receiver include Adam Dawson (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS), Seth Elmquist (FY, Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS), Cameron Krugerud (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), Ryan Matrious (FY, White Bear Lake, Minn./Centennial HS), David Murray (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Harding HS), Willie Washington (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and Jerrad Zimmel (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn.).

Dawson, Elmquist, Matrious, Murray, Washington and Zimmel earned all-conference honors, while Krugerud was a member of a state title team at Wayzata. Zimmel was also a second-team all-state recipient in 2008.

Several players will compete for playing time at running back, including returners Waylon Hartwick (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Roby, and newcomers Danny Bergeson (FY, Red Wing, Minn.), Eddie Anderson (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), Marvin Riedewald (FY, Cape Coral, Fla./Ida S. Baker HS), Willie Platzer (FY, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and James Strand (SR, Brainerd, Minn.), a sprinter on Augsburg's track team.

Three starters return to the offensive line -- Tyler Reiter (SR, Lakefield, Minn./Jackson County Central HS), Josh Groll (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and All-MIAC honorable-mention selection Josh Corrigan (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS). The other two spots on the line remain open, with John Burns (SO, Red Wing, Minn.) moving from the defensive line to the offensive line, and Nick DeVet (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), Andy Witzel (SR, Fulda, Minn.), Kendall Langert (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), Josh Beck (SO, Rush City, Minn.) and Evan Decker (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Como Park HS) all returning.

Newcomer Eric Dooley (FY, Eagan, Minn.), an all-conference player who competed in the state all-star game, could step into a key role on the offensive line, Haege noted. Other newcomers on the offensive line include Tyler Bonnsetter (FY, Elk River, Minn./Spectrum HS), Jake Corrigan (FY, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS), Jake Gagne (FY, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS), Dane Koengeter (FY, Mincoqua, Wis./Lakeland Union HS), Brian Rud (FY, Lonsdale, Minn./Montgomery-Lonsdale HS) and Alex Velasquez (FY, Naples, Fla./Batton Collier HS).

Defense: Solid experience returning
Eight starters and 24 letterwinners return to the Augsburg defense, which is returning to a 4-3 base alignment this season.

The defensive line and linebacking corps have plenty of talent back, as six of the seven regular starters return, along with several players who gained valuable experience in the defensive rotation last year.

On the defensive line, Alex Glasenapp (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) returns after leading the team with 7.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks last year, to go along with 41 total tackles and two forced fumbles. Also on the outside, Josh Collins (JR, Rosemount, Minn.) is back, after recording 32 tackles last year.

The inside of the line will be keyed by the return of three key seniors -- Genshi Tezuka (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), Erik Fossum (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) and Jake Schoenecker (SR, New Prague, Minn.). Aaron Perry (FY, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) missed last season due to injury, but should be a key role player on the line, Haege said, as will returners Tony Rickoff (SO, Winona, Minn.), Donovan Martin (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Jay Darrell (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS).

Brady Soule (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS), who played basketball last season for the Auggies, will add football to his resume this season, playing on the defensive line. Newcomer Chris McCollom (FY, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) could contend for a spot in the defensive line rotation, Haege noted. Other newcomers on the line include Nick Larson (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), Sean Crayne (FY, Trimont, Minn./Martin County West HS), Tyler Jensen (FY, Minneapolis, Minn/Washburn HS), Andrew Swanson (FY, Lakeville, Minn.) and DeAngelo York.

The linebacking corps has always been a strength at Augsburg, and this year should be no exception, with three starters returning with plenty of experience. Andrew Bergeson (SR, Red Wing, Minn.) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors last season after a 65-tackle season, as does Adam Mead (JR, St. Francis, Minn.), who recorded 62 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss last year, and Adam Ebert (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS), who claimed 57 tackles and two interceptions.

Peter Joppru (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) shined in his first year with the Auggies last year, recording 42 tackles, and should see plenty of time in the linebacker rotation. Eric Arlien (SO, Howard Lake, Minn./Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted HS), Dan Brandt (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Mitch Gerold (SO, Braham, Minn.) also return this season.

Newcomers to the linebacking corps include Bryce Vee (FY, Coon Rapids, Minn./Blaine HS), Robert Hammack (FY, DeKalb, Ill.), Joel Lopez (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Hopkins HS), Niko Michaelson (FY, Cloquet, Minn.) and Jake Wilson (FY, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS).

In the defensive backfield, starters Tyler Judkins (SR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and John Hibbs (JR, Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer HS) are back, with Judkins likely moving from cornerback to free safety and Hibbs moving to strong safety, along with returner Dane Bates (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.). Judkins led the Auggies with three interceptions and five pass breakups last season, while Hibbs had an interception and three breakups.

Andy Roff (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS), Anthony Morelli (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Johnson HS), Mark Goers (SR, Jefferson, Wis./Lake Mills HS) and Matt Solberg (SR, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) return with secondary experience, along with DeAndre Dennis (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) and Shepard Sonstegard (SO, Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman HS).

Newcomers Jordan Roue (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS), Nick Riedel (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.), Kaleb Williams (FY, Lakeville, Minn.), Hunter Berkelman (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), Andrew Klus (FY, Edina, Minn.), Forrest Lloyd (FY, South St. Paul, Minn./Humboldt HS), Vontrez Phelps (FY, St. Paul, Minn./Humboldt HS), Marcus Townsend (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) and Wesley Waytashek (FY, Little Falls, Minn.) also join the secondary.

Special Teams: Kicker/punter back
Jack Christopherson (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) will return to kicking and punting duties for the Auggies. He connected on four field goals and 33-of-35 extra-point attempts last season as a kicker, while averaging 34.3 yards per punt. Dave Carroll (SR, Richfield, Minn.) also joins the Auggies this season as a kicker.

Running back James Strand (SR, Brainerd, Minn.) will likely handle return duties on both kickoffs and punts, Haege said, and Tim Garnhardt (SR, Jordan, Minn.) is coming back for his third year as the Auggies' long snapper.
