Augsburg dominates in 41-6 win at Division II Southwest Minnesota State!

MARSHALL, Minn. (12/6/05) -- Winning four of the six matches competed and taking advantage of four forfeits, the Augsburg College wrestling team claimed its 18th straight dual-meet victory over Southwest Minnesota State University, a 41-6 decision on Tuesday night at SMSU.

The Auggies gained a pin and two major decisions to improve to 2-0 on the season in dual meets. Augsburg, the defending NCAA Division III national champions and winners of nine of the last 15 national crowns, is currently ranked No. 1 in the Division III national poll.

Augsburg is now 201-13 in dual meets against teams from Divisions II and III since the 1989-90 season. Augsburg has lost just eight matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season.

Southwest Minnesota State, a Division II squad, is now 0-1 in dual meets. Augsburg is now 19-3 in the all-time series against SMSU, a series that dates to the 1984-85 season. Augsburg has won 18 straight meets between the two schools dating to the 1988-89 season.

Augsburg 184-pounder Robbie Gotreau (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and heavyweight Andrew Neumann (Jr., Somerset, Wis.) remained unbeaten with major-decision victories for the Auggies. Gotreau improved to 11-0 with a 12-1 match-opening win over SMSU's Tyler Johnson (Fr., Harrisburg, S.D.), and Neumann improved to 9-0 with a 12-0 win over Jeremy Schafer (Sr., Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY HS).

Augsburg's Josh Hansen (Jr., Albert Lea, Minn.) improved to 8-1 with a third-period pin of SMSU's Keefer Jensen (Sr., Missouri Valley, Iowa). Augsburg's other win came from Seth Flodeen (Fr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) at 125 with a 7-3 win over Kurt Smith (So., Brookings, S.D.).

SMSU's Joel Wipperfurth (Sr., Lodi, Wis.) scored a 2-1 win over Augsburg's Wally O'Connor (So., Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West HS) at 197 pounds, and Ryan Reed (Jr., Flandreau, S.D.) claimed a 9-3 decision over Paul Bjorkstrand (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) at 133.

The final four weight classes were forfeits to Augsburg, giving the Auggies 24 team points.

Both teams will be in action on Saturday (12/10) at 9 a.m. at the St. Cloud State Invitational, considered one of the top small-college meets in the Midwest. Also on Saturday at 9 a.m., the Augsburg White Team (JV) will compete at the Dick Walker Invitational at Wartburg (Iowa).
