HAM LAKE, Minn. -- Joel Kociemba finished 17th with a 9-over-par 153 to lead the Augsburg College men's golf team to a 10th-place finish at the competitive Augsburg Fall Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday at the Majestic Oaks Golf Club.
Augsburg's squad finished 10th in the 13-school, 14-team field with a 633 (312-321) total. Augsburg's Gray (JV) squad finished 14th with a 673 (356-317) total.
"The guys hit a bump in the road this weekend," said Augsburg head coach Ted Vickerman. "This tournament is a learning experience for the guys. Every week we play against some of the best teams in NCAA Division III golf. You just can't have a bad day and compete. The team realizes that they can play right with the other schools; that is the frusturating part. The good thing is the team is more driven now to have a good week of practice and go get them at the next tournament."
Kociemba shot 77 and 76 in his two rounds for the 153 total in the 36-hole event. Jason Henning finished in a tie for 37th with a 158 (77-81) total, while Brian Deuel and Alex Umland finished in a tie for 53rd with totals of 163 each. Zach Johnson placed 63rd with a 166 total.
"Joel played solid all weekend. He hit the ball excellent and had numerous putts burn the edge of the cup for birdies," Vickerman said. "Joel can crush his driver and he some amazing drives. He hit the 540-yard, par-5 first hole in two and made birdie. He hit the ball great and hit 12 greens in regulation. He was kind of on auto-pilot with his swing. The few times he had to recover from a bad shot, he excuted his recovery shot to perfection -- threading his ball through two-wide-open holes in the trees.
"The team started out pretty good. Alex and Jason made 20-foot birdie putts for 2 on the par-3 15th hole, their third hole. Joel birdied his second hole of the day and Jason started birdie bogey birdie. Majestic Oaks is a difficult golf course and it forces each golfer to hit accurate shots. It also rewards good shots. The team hit a couple of wayward tee shots and it led to big numbers."
For the Augsburg Gray (JV) squad,
Matt Kowalski led the way with a 165 total, and the Gray squad outscored the varsity by a 317-321 margin on the second day.
"I was happy to see the Gray team post a solid score the second day. The second team beat the Maroon team on Sunday," Vickerman said. "It is our tradition that the maroon team has to caddie for the Gray team the next time we practice if they have a higher team score."
Wisconsin-Stout won the tournament with a 598 total, following Saturday's 306 team effort with a 292 score on Sunday. Luther (Iowa) was second at 601, and Wisconsin-Eau Claire was third at 602. Earning medalist honors was St. Thomas' James Stafford, who shot a 144 (70-74), even-par total.
