Auggies lose OT thriller to Tommies

MINNEAPOLIS -- Elliot Amundson (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Trinity HS) directed home a right-side feed from Angel Riera (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) 3:48 into the second overtime, giving the University of St. Thomas a 1-0 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field.

The loss was the first of the season for Augsburg (5-1-1 overall, 1-1-0 MIAC), the No. 14-ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national rankings. It was the first win in MIAC play for St. Thomas (4-3-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC).

""It was a disappointing result for sure. St. Thomas was very good in the air and they were as direct a team as we are going to play, and that made it a bit difficult to collect the ball and play on the floor," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker.

The teams played an even, physical contest throughout, as St. Thomas outshot Augsburg by just a 14-13 margin. Each team had several opportunities to score, but the goalkeepers for both teams -- Pascaul Venter (SR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) for Augsburg and Carlos Castelan (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) for St. Thomas -- both had impressive performances. Venter collected six saves in goal, while Castelan had four saves, including a dramatic save on a point-blank, bicycle-kick shot by Augsburg's Van Hong (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) in the 40th minute.

"Van Hong's bicycle kick from Jeff Butler's (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) service was spoiled by some good goalkeeping," Holker said. "Carlos was at his best tonight, hanging on to everything that we put on frame. Unfortunately our cleanest chances were placed wide of the goal."

Hong and Ahmed Gobana (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) had three shots each for Augsburg, while Ryan Sorensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) had two shots. Josh Pozner (FY, Roseville, Minn.) had three shots for St. Thomas.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday (9/23), as Augsburg travels to face Macalester at 7:30 p.m., while St. Thomas plays at St. Scholastica at 4 p.m.

"I think we got it wrong in training yesterday, and that hurt us. As a coaching staff, we have to be held accountable for that. We will move on," Holker said. "We face another very direct team on Wednesday when we travel to Macalester. Carson Gorecki is a handful up top for them. Macalester has a strong overall record against Augsburg teams and we hope to start closing that gap with another win."
