Women's golf 13th at Midwest Classic

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

LAKE CITY, Minn. -- With four golfers shooting sub-200 rounds, the Augsburg College women's golf team produced its best 36-hole team score since the 2004-05 season for the second straight weekend, finishing 13th at the Carleton College Division III Midwest Classic, held Saturday and Sunday at the Jewel Golf Club.

Augsburg finished the 36-hole event with a 733 total (370-363). For the second straight weekend, Augsburg produced its best team score in a 36-hole event since the 2004-05 season, a 729 at the Concordia-Moorhead Invitational on Sept. 11-12, 2004. With its 13th-place finish, Augsburg finished ahead of three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes in the 18-team field.

"The women's team keeps on a roll with another great tournament," said Augsburg head coach Ted Vickerman. "The key to their success this year is the great leadership by the team captains and their desire to improve. Everyone on the team can be proud of their season so far. It is fun to keep improving. I am amazed at how individual and team scoring barriers seem to get broken each week."

Stefani Zappa (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry HS) continued her strong season, finishing in a tie for 44th in the 101-player field with a 172 (86-86) total. Her last three multi-day events have produced her top three 36-hole scores of her collegiate career.

"Stef had one birdie and played good all day, (but) the first round got a little late and she was forced to finish in the dark. She felt a little rushed and did not finish as good as she hoped. She shot 46-40 and really played great on the back nine. It was unlucky there was not more daylight in the day for her to finish in a comfortable pace," Vickerman said. "The second day was a lot like the first. She shot 45-41 for 86. She birdied the same hole and hit her driver great. I am really proud how consistently she has been playing and she is really having a great fall season."

Johanna Frykmark (JR, Taby, Sweden/Rollingby Gymnasium HS) finished in a tie for 55th, shooting 181 (92-89) over the two days.

"Johanna shot 92 the first day and it could have been a lot better. She hit it well all day but faced a little trouble on the last few hole," Vickerman said. "In the second round, she shot 89 with a 10 on the 18th hole. She broke her driver on the tee shot and it led to bad things. She hit a amazing bunker shot from 144 yards, which landed a foot from the pin and got birdie. Then two holes later she made another birdie."

Miranda Maxwell (FY, Delano, Minn.) finished with career bests for both an 18-hole and 36-hole event, shooting 187 (94-93). Kelsey Corrick (JR, Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) took nine strokes off her career-best 36-hole finish with a 193 (98-95) total.

"Miranda played great. She hit her drives nice and straight and hit a lot of good approach shots. She putted better this weekend and shot two rounds in the 90s. She really played good the second day except for two bad holes. For most of the day, it was looking like she was going to post a score in the 80s. She did a great job at just playing golf and not thinking too much about how to do it," Vickerman said. "Kelsey had a rough start, but finished with five pars on her back nine the first day. She hit her tee shots right on target and got better has the day went on. She even improved her score the second day."

Jill Ferguson (FY, Batavia, Ill.) finished with a 207 total (103-104), while Megan Dale finished with a 216 (108-108) total.

"Jill had a fun time on the greens and putted excellent on Saturday. She saw how the ball should roll in to the cup and then stroked it right on line," Vickerman said.

Augsburg finishes the fall half of the 2009-10 season on Oct. 3-5 at the MIAC Championships at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn.
