Auggies compete at UW-EC Invite

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- Stefani Zappa (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry HS) set a personal-best for a 36-hole tournament with a two-day total of 168, leading the Augsburg College women's golf team to a 16th-place finish at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Georgianni Memorial Invitational, held Saturday and Sunday.

As a team, Augsburg finished 16th in the 19-school, 21-team field with a two-day total of 758 (384-374), Augsburg's best team score in a 36-hole event since a 750 score in a meet on April 23-24, 2005.

"The women's golf team shot 374. All I can say is wow!" said head coach Ted Vickerman. "The girls played great. We had great thing after great thing happen this weekend. The team took 16th out of one of the strongest fields of competition we'll play in all year. The list goes on and on. Confidence, hard work, and a positive attitude go a long way on the golf course and that was our key this weekend. I am very proud of the girls' commitment to improve and have fun. This team never gives up."

Zappa's two-day total of 168 (83-85) included a first-round 83, her personal-best 18-hole round in her three Augsburg seasons. Zappa finished tied for 21st in the 112-player field.

“Mental game was the key on these courses, it was very important to stay positive even after a bad shot or hole," Zappa said.

Johanna Frykmark (JR, Taby, Sweden/Rollingby Gymnasium HS) finished tied for 45th with a 176 (89-87) total, just four strokes from tying her collegiate best for a 36-hole event.

Also for Augsburg, Jill Ferguson (FY, Batavia, Ill.) finished with a 209 total, while Miranda Maxwell (FY, Delano, Minn.) shot 211, Kelsey Corrick (JR, Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake HS) shot 215 and Megan Dale (SR, Northfield, Minn.) shot 219.

"Megan shot her best tournament score on the first day," Vickerman said. "Kelsey improved by 11 strokes from the first day. She hit every drive right on track and her short game as also very impressive on the second day. Jill was able to regroup after nine holes and come back on the back nine of the last day with eight strokes less. Johanna had only 31 putts the first day and bounced back after a poor shot with a great one."

Augsburg competes in two events hosted by Concordia-Moorhead next weekend at the Wildflower Golf Club in Detroit Lakes, Minn., the Cobber Open on Friday (9/11) and the Cobber Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (9/12-13).
