D3WRESTLE.COM WRESTLER OF WEEK
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College wrestler
Jared Massey (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) was named the
D3wrestle.com/WWSport.com Wrestler of the Week, it was announced on Thursday by D3wrestle.com, a website that covers NCAA Division III wrestling.
The defending NCAA Division III national champion at 197 pounds, Massey delivered two key victories enabling the No. 1-ranked Auggies to stay unbeaten in dual meets last week. In Augsburg's 18-12 win over top-ranked Division II squad Nebraska-Omaha last Friday, Massey clinched the win for the Auggies when he topped UNO's Jacob Marrs 6-2 in battle of the top-ranked 197-pound wrestlers in their respective divisions. On Sunday, Massey scored a 14-2, major-decision win to clinch the Auggies' 20-13 win at No. 6-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Massey, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Division III at 197, is now 16-0 on the season with six pins and three major decisions. In his two seasons as an Auggie, Massey is now 46-1. A two-time Minnesota high school state champion wrestler who competed at Division I Wisconsin in the 2003-04 season, he returned to collegiate wrestling in the 2008-09 campaign after four years away from the sport and dominated throughout the season, finishing 30-1 with 16 pins and three major decisions to claim the 44th individual national title in Augsburg wrestling history.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (1/30) at 9 a.m., splitting its squad for action at the St. John's North Country Open and the Grand View (Iowa) Open.
