COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Augsburg's
Marcus Brumm (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) scored a game and career-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as the Auggies fell 77-62 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup with St. John's University on Wednesday night at SJU's Sexton Arena.
Augsburg (8-3 overall, 3-3 MIAC) was led by Brumm's 22 points, which included a perfect 6-for-6 night at the free throw line.
David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) finished with 15 points and a team-high three assists, while
Cory Polta (SO, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) led the Auggies on the boards with seven rebounds and added 10 points and a blocked shot.
St. John's (8-3 overall, 5-1 MIAC) was led by the duo of Aaron Barmore and Andy Burns, who scored 20 and 16 points respectively. Aaron Burtzel led all players with eight rebounds and added 11 points.
Augsburg jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead off a three-pointer and layup by Olson but St. John's countered with 16-2 run over the next three minutes. Augsburg cut the St. John's lead to 25-21 off a pair of free throws by Brumm but St. John's put together a 7-0 run to bring the lead back to double-digits. Augsburg cut the Johnnie lead to five at 36-31 but St. John's was able to get the final basket of the half and take a 38-31 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Augsburg cut the St. John's lead to five at 55-50 with 10:05 left to play but couldn't get any closer to the hot shooting Johnnies, who connected on 57.1 percent (16-of-28) in the second half, held on for the 77-62 win.
Despite outscoring St. John's 38-28 in points in the paint and 30-14 in bench points, Augsburg was only able to hit 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the field and 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from beyond the arc. St. John's finished the game shooting 55.2 percent (32-of-58) from the field and 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from three point range. A bright spot for the Auggies came at the free throw line where they were able to post a perfect night, connecting on 14-of-14 for the charity stripe, making them the only MIAC team to do so yet this season.
Augsburg and St. John's both return to action on Saturday (1/9) with Augsburg traveling to Macalester and St. John's hosting Concordia.
