Auggies edged in Showcase opener

BLAINE, Minn. -- Joel Sauer (SR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) scored for Augsburg College, but the Gustavus Adolphus College men's hockey team used a goal early in the third period to edge the Auggies 2-1 in the opening game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase on Friday evening at Fogarty Arena.

Sauer's 4-on-4 goal, from Jim Jensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS), tied the game at the 12:22 mark of the second period. But Zach May put the Gusties on top just 83 seconds into the third period, scoring from Ryan Noonan. Mitch Carlson also scored for the Gusties, with a power play goal eight minutes into the second period from Ross Ring-Jarvi.

Augsburg outshot Gustavus by a 34-24 margin in the season-opening game for both teams. Justin Lochner (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) had 22 saves for Augsburg, while Josh Swartout had 33 saves for Gustavus.

Nick Guran (JR, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) had eight shots on goal for Augsburg, while David Hines JR, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) had seven shots.

Augsburg faces St. Mary's on Saturday (10/30) at 7 p.m. in the Auggies' second game of the MIAC Showcase at Fogarty Arena.
