GAME BOXSCORE
DUBUQUE, Iowa -- Augsburg College took a first-half lead on a
Van Hong (SR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) goal, but two Idrissa Soumaoro goals gave the University of Dubuque a 2-1 victory over the visiting Auggies in a nonconference men's soccer game on Tuesday evening at Oyen Field.
Hong scored for Augsburg (8-3-1 overall), the No. 24-ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III national poll, in the 37th minute off a cross by
Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College).
But Dubuque (9-3-0) claimed the win with two Soumaoro goals, both assisted by Pablo Martinez and Tommy Benedix -- a score to the upper right of the net in the 43rd minute, and a goal off a failed clearance in the 61st minute.
"This result is painful for our conference," said Augsburg coach
Greg Holker. "We missed a few sitters and created their second goal by clearing a ball backwards from 40 yards to their most threatening player."
Augsburg outshot Dubuque by a 13-9 margin and had three corner kicks to Dubuque's two. Nicholas Kasper had two saves for Dubuque in goal, while Augsburg goalkeeper
Clayton Lynch (FY, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had one save.
"It's a difficult test in a midweek game five hours from home, but we have to do better than this," Holker said. "Our best players need to perform as our best players, and we must take care of the details of the game -- the simple stuff."
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (10/9) with a game at Concordia-Moorhead.
"I always enjoy the adversity of a game in Iowa. I think it makes us stronger in the end. Now its up to us to decide if that's the case with this team," Holker said.
