GAME BOXSCORE
WHITEWATER, Wis. –
Mohamed Sankoh (FY, St. Paul, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal with 26 seconds left in the second overtime, sending the Augsburg College men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over the College of St. Scholastica in an NCAA Division III men's soccer first-round playoff game on Saturday night at Fiskum Field.
Augsburg (16-4-1 overall) will advance to play host Wisconsin-Whitewater (13-2-3 overall), which topped Macalester (14-5-1) 2-0 in the other first-round game on Saturday evening in Whitewater. The game will be on Sunday (11/14) at 6 p.m. at Whitewater.
Sankoh blocked a St. Scholastica (17-4-2) pass, then slipped behind a defender to score his fourth goal of the season – all coming in the last three weeks. He scored his first collegiate goal in a 1-0 win over Gustavus on Oct. 29, which clinched a MIAC playoff berth for the Auggies, then scored two goals, including an overtime game-winner, in Augsburg's 3-2 MIAC playoff championship game win last Friday.
"I was concerned we were going to let this game be decided by spot kicks after playing well enough to win it in regulation," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "For Mo to come through again was pretty incredible. He's on a bit of a tear here right now -- we just hope he can stay with it for a little while longer."
In a game played in windy conditions with drizzle in Whitewater, the Auggies outshot the Saints by a 14-4 margin, including an 11-3 advantage in the second half and overtime.
Augsburg goalkeeper
Will Morlock (FY, Grand Haven, Mich.) made one save to score his eighth shutout of the season – and fourth in the last five games for the Auggies.
"We were solid in defense -- not great, but good enough. Will wasn't tested, but we expect that to be different tomorrow night against Whitewater," Holker said. "We had more than enough chances to win the game - I thought
Van Hong,
Chad Gilmer and
Ahmed Gobana had all done it at different points just to have their chances saved by Sam Reed."
St. Scholastica goalkeeper Reed had seven saves, including five in the second half and first overtime, when Augsburg was playing with the wind at its back.
"#T.J. Haag#'s play was a bright spot for us, and I thought
Tyler Heaps was strong against Jermaine Dacres on the flank," Holker said. "Overall, the performance was good enough for the night, but it will have to be much improved tomorrow."
With its 16th win of the season, Augsburg set a new school record for single-season wins, breaking the old mark of 15 wins (15-2-1) in the 1975 season. At 16-4-1, it's the fourth time in the last five seasons that Augsburg has had a double-digit win campaign.
