Auggies compete at St. Cloud State Open

FINAL RESULTS

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Tony Valek (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) and Cody Hansen (SO, Albert Lea, Minn.) recorded runner-up finishes in competitive fields, leading the Augsburg College wrestling team at the St. Cloud State University Open on Saturday at Halenbeck Hall.

Both Valek and Hansen had strong efforts in the run to their individual finals, with Valek recroding a pin and major decision among his three wins at 149 pounds, and Hansen recording two pins to reach the final at 141. But both lost to Division I wrestlers competing unattached in the championship matches. Valek, the defending national runner-up at 149, is currently ranked second nationally in the weight class.

Valek, now 12-1 on the season, and Hansen, now 9-2 on the year, were among eight placewinners for the Auggies at the St. Cloud State Open.

Brad Baus (JR, Mukwonago, Wis.) claimed two pins and a 12-0, major-decision win in the third-place match to improve to 12-3 on the year with his third-place finish at 197 pounds.

Three Auggies placed fourth in their weight classes – 133-pounder Cody Madsen (SO, Bayport, Minn./Stillwater HS), 157-pounder Zach Enrico (JR, Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) and heavyweight Niko Bogojevic (FY, Superior, Wis.).

Alex Johnson (JR, Foxhome, Wis./Breckenridge HS) placed fifth at 133, and Brandon Bahr (JR, Bemidji, Minn.) placed fifth at 184 with five wins, the most for any Auggie on the day.

Augsburg is now idle for the holiday break and returns to action on Dec. 29 with competition at the Citrus Open in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
