RED DIVISION FINAL RESULTS
WHITE DIVISION FINAL RESULTS
MOORHEAD, Minn. --
Brad Baus (JR, Mukwonago, Wis.) won all four of his matches by pin to claim the 197-pound Red division title, one of four weight-class titles and 17 placewinning efforts earned by Augsburg College wrestlers at the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon Open, held on Saturday at Alex Nemzek Hall.
Baus improved to 7-2 on the season with his four-pin effort, with pins coming in 3:38, 2:54, 3:37 and 4:38 in the title match.
Tony Valek (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West), ranked No. 2 nationally at 149 pounds in the latest NCAA Division III national poll, improved to 8-0 on the season with three dominating victories -- with two first-period pins and a 10-2 major-decision win -- to score the 149 Red division crown. He scored a 2:47 pin of Concordia-Moorhead's Kevin Fynboh in the finals.
Augsburg also scored two titles in White division classes, with
Alex Johnson (JR, Foxhome, Minn./Breckenridge HS) going 4-0 with a pin and major decision to score the crown at 133, and
Niko Bogojevic (FY, Superior, Wis.) winning all three of his matches, including one by pin, to score the heavyweight crown.
“We had 4 champs on the day, all of which showed marked improvements,” said Augsburg head coach
Mark Matzek. “
Alex Johnson has found his stride once again,
Niko Bogojevic won his second tournament of the year, and captain
Tony Valek once again was solid. Arguably most impressive was
Brad Baus, who pinned his way through the tournament to his first collegiate tournament win.”
Augsburg had five weight class runners-up, including 125-pounder
Josh Roberts (SO, Grand Forks, N.D./Central HS), who had two pins in his 3-1 record on the day in the Red division.
Cody Madsen (SO, Bayport, Minn./Stillwater HS) placed second at 133 Red,
Cody Hansen (SO, Albert Lea, Minn.) placed second at 141 Red,
Brandon Bahr (JR, Bemidji, Minn.) placed second at 174 Red, and
Justin Bowland (FY, Foley, Minn.) placed second at 165 White.
Placing third for Augsburg was
Boyd Suparat (SO, North Branch, Minn.) at 133 Red,
Justin Koob (JR, New Ulm, Minn.) and
Will Keeter (FY, Twin Falls, Idaho) at 141 White, and
Chad Johnson (FY, Ferryville, Wis./DeSoto HS) at Heavyweight White.
Tony Castro (FY, Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah-Miami Lakes HS) placed fourth at 157 Red,
Jackson Mboma (JR, Maple Grove, Minn.) placed fifth at 174 Red,
Jordan Campa (FY, Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) placed fifth at 157 White, and
Ryan Cook (FY, Wetumpka, Ala.) placed sixth at 141 White.
Augsburg , the defending NCAA Division III national champions and current No. 1-ranked team nationally, returns to Moorhead on Wednesday (12/8) at 7 p.m. with a dual meet at Division II MSU Moorhead.
“The squad made great adjustments this week as a team and individually. The coaching staff is proud of how open these young men are to technical adjustments,” Matzek said. “The team can feel good about our performance until Monday, then we must get ready for a hungry MSU Moorhead team on Wednesday night.”
