ST. PETER, Minn. --
David Olson (SR, Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes HS) posted a game-high 23 points as he led Augsburg to a key 75-70 come-from-behind win over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Gustavus at GAC's Gus Young Court. With the win, Augsburg moves to 14-5 overall (9-5 MIAC), just one game out of second place in the
MIAC standings with six conference games remaining.
Augsburg finished with four starters in double figures. Olson led the way with 23 points, which included a 7-for-11 shooting performance from the field and a 5-for-8 performance from beyond the arc.
Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.), posted 17 points while
Ben Flavin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had 15 points and a game-high six assists.
Andy Grzesiak-Grimm (SO, Wyoming, Minn./St. Francis HS) finished with 10 points and five assists, while
Cory Polta (SO, Spring Lake Park, Minn.) led all players with 10 rebounds.
Gustavus (12-7 overall, 10-4 MIAC) was led offensively by Jesse Van Sickle, who posted 18 points and three assists in 33 minutes of action. Paul Blacklock led the Gusties on the boards with eight rebounds and added four points.
After trailing 43-35 at the half, Augsburg put together a 12-0 run in the opening minutes of the second session to tie things up at 47-47. Both teams battled over the middle of the second half but a key 8-0 run gave the Auggies a 67-61 lead with 3:49 to play. Gustavus cut the Augsburg led to three with 55 seconds left in the action. Augsburg's Olson came up with a big blocked shot with 16 seconds remaining and 4-for-4 free throw shooting in the final 10 seconds gave the Auggies the 75-70 win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 54.2 percent (26-of-48), while Gustavus converted on 45.9 percent (28-of-61) of its shots. Gustavus edged Augsburg 32-28 on the boards but 6-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc in the second half helped to seal the win for the Auggies.
Augsburg and Gustavus both return to action on Wednesday (2/3), with Augsburg traveling to Concordia and Gustavus hosting Macalester
