Ward leads Auggies to 3rd place team finish at Carleton Meet of the Hearts

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Nick Ward (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) led Augsburg with a pair of first place finishes as the Auggies claimed a third place team finish at the Carleton Meet of the Hearts on Saturday afternoon at Carleton's Recreation Center.

The Augsburg men's track and field team posted one of their best team finishes in recent years, scoring 99.5 team points, finishing just behind Bethel (101.5) and champion Hamline (203.5).

Augsburg's Brent Haglund (SR, Fridley, Minn./Fridley HS) set a school record for the Auggies in the 5,000 meter run, posting a time of 15:14.27 in a very competitive field. Teammate Victor Sanchez (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) finished just behind Haglund, recording a fifth-place finish with a time of 15:22.05.

Augsburg continued its strong season in the sprints on Saturday. In the 55 meter dash, Ward claimed top honors, recording a time of 6.52 seconds. In the 200 meters, Augsburg finished with four of the top eight performers -- Rick Wolke (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn.) finished third (23.05), Ward finished fifth (23.16), James Strand (SR, Pequot Lakes, Minn./Brainerd HS) finished sixth (23.25), and Henry Millette (FY, Brainard, Minn.) eighth (23.94).

The Augsburg jumpers really came through at Carleton, claiming three of the top five places in the long jump and two of the top three places in the triple jump. Ward earned top honors in the long jump with a distance of 6.39 meters (20-11.75), ranking him fourth in the MIAC. Also in the long jump, Adam Horkey (SR, Windom, Minn.) finished third for the Auggies (6.12 meters) and Emmanuel Marcellino (SO, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) finished fifth (6.04 meters). In his first competition of the year, Marcellino took home top honors in the triple, posting a mark of 12.95 meters (42-6) ranking him fifth in the conference. Teammate Seth Norberg (SO, Northfield, Minn.), finished third with a mark of 12.50 meters (41-0.25).

Augsburg also showed its depth at the 400 meter distance, recording three of the top-six finishes. Leading the way was Wolke, who finished third (51.17), followed closely by Strand in fourth 51.19 and Joe Arnold (SO, Grand Rapids, Minn.) in sixth (52.21).

Also claiming top-two finishes for Augsburg were Matthew Schafer (FY, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) and Horkey. Schafer finished second in the 600 yard dash (1:16.19), while Horkey finished second in the 55 meter hurdles (8.06).

The Augsburg men's track team returns to action when it takes part in the University of Minnesota Snowshoe Open on Friday (2/19) and the St. Olaf College Tostrud Classic on Saturday (2/20).
