Auggies drop twinbill to Titans

GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX

MINNEAPOLIS -- Donald Blunt (JR, Richfield, Minn.) hit a three-run home run to left field in the second game to lead Augsburg College, but the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh rallied back to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Auggies in nonconference baseball action on Monday evening at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh (2-0 overall) claimed an 8-1 win in the first game, and topped Augsburg (1-3 overall) 5-4 in the second game.

Pitching eight innings in the two games, UW-Oshkosh's Kyle Kannenberg (SR, Oshkosh, Wis./West HS) earned a win and save, pitching a complete-game win with two strikeouts in the first game, and surviving a seventh-inning rally by the Auggies for the save in the second game. He had three strikeouts and four walks, while allowing just three hits in his eight innings of work.

Andrew Eichstaedt (SO, Appleton, Wis./North HS) went 5-for-6 for the Titans in the doubleheader, with two doubles, a triple and three RBI. Tim Gerding (SO, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS), Eric Olson (SR, New Prague, Minn.) and Joe Pierce (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) had two hits each for the Auggies in the twinbill, with Gerding hitting a triple and Olson hitting a double.

In the second game, the Auggies took a 3-1 lead in the third inning, as Blunt hit a towering shot to left field for his first homer of the season and seventh of his collegiate career.

But the Titans rallied back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Blake Berger (JR, Star Prairie, Wis./New Richmond HS) hit a run-scoring single and Andrew Eichstaedt (SO, Appleton, Wis./North HS) hit a two-run double to left. An insurance run came across in the sixth on Nolan Fadness' (JR, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial HS) RBI single.

Augsburg rallied in the top of the seventh inning, as two walks and a two-out, ground-rule double by John Demgen (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) plated a run, but the Auggies left the bases loaded on a game-ending groundout.

Tom Petersen (SO, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) started for the Auggies and allowed four hits in four-plus innings of work, with Mark Heise (JR, Foley, Minn.) taking the loss in relief. Luke Westphal (SO, Clintonville, Wis.) picked up the pitching win for UW-Oshkosh in relief of starter Sean Grabig (FY, Howard, Wis./Bay Port HS). Westphal had three strikeouts and Grabig had two.

In the first game, UW-Oshkosh scored two runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to build the advantage over the Auggies. Derek Hiroskey (JR, Kimberly, Wis.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, and Mickey Fadness (SR, Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial HS) and Eichstaedt had two hits each, with Eichstaedt scoring twice and Fadness driving in two runs.

Augsburg's lone run came in the third inning, as a groundout by Jeff Butler (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) plated Olson.

Kannenberg allowed just two Auggie hits while striking out two and walking one in his complete-game win.
