MINNEAPOLIS --
Jennifer Castillo (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) hit two triples and drove in three runs in the second game, part of a 4-for-5 effort in the doubleheader, as Augsburg College swept visiting Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball action on Wednesday at Edor Nelson Field.
Britney Bruzek (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader with three runs scored and three RBI, including her MIAC-leading sixth home run of the season, as Augsburg won the second game 5-0, after winning the first game 3-1.
The sweep improves Augsburg's record to 17-11 overall, 7-3 in MIAC play -- its best record after 28 games since going 18-10 in the 1992 season, en route to a 24-12 overall finish.
Karen Robinson (SO, Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge HS) had a double among her two hits in the doubleheader for Carleton (5-19 overall, 2-8 MIAC).
In the second game, Castillo drove in three of Augsburg's five runs -- driving in
Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) on a triple in the first inning, and driving home
Kylee Persing (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) and
Sabrina Siple (SO, Farmington, Minn.) on a triple in the fifth inning.
Bruzek drove in the Auggies' other two runs in the second game, plating Castillo on a suicide-squeeze bunt in the first inning, and hitting her sixth home run of the year, a solo shot to center field in the sixth inning. Her six home runs are second-most in a single season in school history, behind the 11 hit by Rachael Ekholm in 2002.
In the first game, Augsburg scored twice in the first inning, as Castillo singled and scored on a single by Bruzek, and Bruzek scored on a single by
Allyson Ruedy (FY, Waseca, Minn.). The Auggies scored again in the third inning on an RBI double by
Laura Strandell (JR, Pine Island, Minn.), plating Bruzek.
Carleton had the bases loaded in the sixth inning but was unable to score, and scored its lone run of the game in the seventh, as Dana Mackey (SO, Hingham, Mass.) hit an RBI single. The Knights stranded eight runners on base in the first game and 11 in the second game.
Augsburg pitcher
Melissa Larsen (SR, Andover, Minn.) picked up pitching wins in both games, with 4.1 innings of scoreless work in the first game and four innings of scoreless work with four strikeouts in the second game.
Hannah Askew (SO, Wadena, Minn./Wadena-Deer Creek HS) also pitched in both games, including three innings of scoreless relief in the second game to earn the save.
Robinson struck out three batters for Carleton in the first game, while Chelsea Yost (FY, Bemidji, Minn.) struck out five in the second game.
Both teams return to MIAC play with doubleheaders on the road on Saturday (4/17) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at St. Mary's and Carleton playing at Gustavus.
