wrestling-award-10
WRESTLING (12-0-0 in dual meets, NCAA Division III National Champions, NWCA Division III National Duals champions, 1st at NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional) --
With eight All-Americans and three national runner-up individuals, Augsburg claimed its 11th NCAA Division III national title in the last 20 seasons, and first title for second-year head coach Mark Matzek. Matzek, named Division III National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, is the youngest head coach to ever win a Division III wrestling national title at age 27, in his second year as the Auggies' mentor. Augsburg assistant head coach Jared Evans was named National Assistant Coach of the Year by the NWCA. The championship marked a unique first for the Auggies – the first time Augsburg has won a national title without an individual national titlist. The feat has occurred just twice before in the 37-year history of the Division III tournament. Augsburg had eight All-Americans – two more than any other school in the field – and its seven top-four finishers were also two more than any other school in the field. Augsburg extended its streak of “trophy finishes” – finishing in the top four in the team race – to 22 straight years, the longest active streak of any NCAA wrestling program, regardless of division. As a team, Augsburg finished unbeaten in dual meets with a perfect 12-0 record, its first unbeaten dual-meet record since 2001-02. The Auggies won the Division III Great Lakes Regional for the eighth straight year, and captured the NWCA Division III National Duals title for the fifth time in the last nine years. Augsburg claimed two dual-meet wins over traditional rival Wartburg (Iowa), while also claiming a dual win over eventual Division II national champion Nebraska-Omaha.
