Augsburg men's soccer assistant coach Evan Fuhs is sending daily diaries during the Auggies' team trip to Spain. Here's the team's diary entry for Tuesday, May 11:
Managing a group of 40 in an airport is no easy feat, and maneuvering a coach bus through the streets of small towns in the Spanish countryside is surely no easier. Having mastered those methods of travel, the Augsburg men's soccer team was ready for a new experience. Late Saturday night, the group boarded a train in Barcelona to arrive in Madrid the following morning.
Here is an account of the trip from
Ryan Sorensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS):
As we boarded the train, I was not sure what to expect. I had never been on a train before, so I knew it would be a new experience for me as well as the majority of the team. When I first looked into the rooms that we had, it reminded me of two Urness Hall rooms scrunched into one. The group had about 11 rooms with six beds in each. There was basically just enough room to sleep and no more.
However, being college students, we all figured out quickly how to make shift these rooms into a place where there could be enough room for at least eight people to sit comfortably, play cards or just hang out. Given a narrow room with triple suspended bunk beds on each side, we flipped the middle bed down to make the back of a couch with the bottom bed as the seat.
This really is a close knit team. We are not friends for August through November during the season; it is much more than that. So, we know how to make the best of a situation and have a good time together.
This train experience was not only fun, it is by far my new favorite way to travel. Hanging out with the team made the eight-hour trip from Barcelona to Madrid go by extremely fast. It really gave us the opportunity to be apart of something very new to all of us. It really was an eye-opener to really just how big the world is and how little space our team needs to enjoy the world together.
