WINNIPEG, Manitoba – The Augsburg College football team made the best of a not-so-good weather day on Friday.

With temperatures in the 60s and rain for most of the morning, a planned trip to The Forks was pushed back to the early afternoon. Instead, the Auggies spent the morning in a mall near the team's hotel, then ventured to The Forks for lunch and a boat tour through Winnipeg.

The Forks, a Canadian national historic site, sits at the fork of the Assiniboine River and Red River in the heart of Winnipeg, and served as a meeting place for groups of people for thousands of years. The Auggies learned about the history of the area on a half-hour pontoon boat trip down the two rivers, with information provided by knowledgeable guides.

Members of the team followed the boat trip with visits to a lively marketplace adjacent to The Forks, with plenty of opportunities for souvenir shopping, along with panning for gold at an educational display in the main courtyard.

After the team enjoyed their visit to the area, head coach Frank Haege made a shift in the team's schedule, canceling the Auggies' practice to give the team a well-deserved night of rest in the hotel. Many players retreated to a nice indoor pool and waterslide area at the hotel to enjoy the evening.

On Saturday, the Auggies will face the East Side Eagles, a local adult club team, at 11 a.m. at the Eagles' new home field. The players are eager to take the field to see how they match up against the club squad.
