Augsburg men's soccer assistant coach Evan Fuhs is sending daily diaries during the Auggies' team trip to Spain. Here's the team's diary entry for Friday, May 7:
After three games in Spain, a pattern has emerged. As the we progress through the our schedule, opposing teams have been progressively older and more direct. To compliment that, the refereeing has been more creative in their assistance of the home teams.
Tonight's game, featured Sant Pere Pescador -- a club with teams ranging from youth to this adult team -- at their home field near Roses. The opponent was considerably more direct than the two previous, but again, the Augsburg back line dealt well with it.
Despite an even-handed match, Sant Pere Pescador opened the scoring from an indirect free kick driven into the top corner. The Auggies battled back hard and equalized through a delicate chip from
Ryan Sorensen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS), coming in from the left.
Once again though, the Auggies fell victim to a surprising decision by the referee. The following direct free kick again nestled in the top corner. Keeping with the pattern, the Auggies poured on the pressure. Going without substitutions in the final 20 minutes, the Auggies finally equalized. This time the goal came from the opposite flank and
David Scheller (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.).
As the game drew to a close, it got increasingly more physical. At one point, the Auggies equalized on a long free kick that was headed down into the goal. As had been the precedent on long free kicks though, the referees decided the Auggies were offside.
With the final score of 2-2, the Auggies are improving statistically. Nevertheless, the improvement on the field has been more significant, which leaves us all with much excitement heading into Madrid for the weekend.
