MINNEAPOLIS -- Goalkeeper
Diana Bocklund (SO, Pine Springs, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) claimed 13 saves to record her sixth collegiate shutout, as the Augsburg College women's soccer team played a two-overtime, scoreless tie with Luther College in a nonconference contest on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg was outshot by a 24-18 margin by Luther, including a 10-2 margin in the second half, but Bocklund collected seven saves in the second half and overtime to preserve the tie in the season-opening game for both teams.
The Auggies had opportunities to score, especially with five corner kicks in the first half and later, six shots in the second overtime, but were unable to put the ball in the net. Luther goalkeeper Hannah Wright (SR, West St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy HS) had five saves in her shutout.
"I was definitely proud of how hard our team played, especially after being so injured throughout the preseason," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "The first-game nerves were present in the beginning, and we failed to finish on the five corners we created in the first half, but overall we stayed committed to the game and shut down a good opponent. We just failed to score."
Bri Dorale (SO, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had five shots for the Auggies, while
Carly Reimer (SO, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and
Courtney Gamrath (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) had three shots each.
"We will take this result and build upon it," Navarre said. "We held some players out tonight because of injury, but we should get them back fairly soon, so I'm excited about the prospects of adding more players to the group that did so well tonight."
Dani Meirick (JR, Pella, Iowa) had seven shots for the Norse, while Kendra Ledel (JR, Shakopee, Minn.) had five shots.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (9/7) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Northwestern-Roseville in nonconference action at Edor Nelson Field.
"It's obviously early, and we are a young team that needs to mature and win these close games," Navarre said. "However, the energy, work rate, and team chemistry are sound. Although we will have to go through some growing pains, I know this team will fight for each other and that will make it a rewarding season I believe. Hopefully we can keep improving and find the back of the net in our next match versus Northwestern."
