Auggies fall on late goal

GAME BOXSCORE

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-River Falls scored the lone goal of the game in the 72nd minute, claiming a 1-0 win over visiting Augsburg College in a nonconference women's soccer game on Saturday evening.

Molly O'Neill scored from Janae Baron and Alyssa Manor at the 71:55 mark to give the Falcons (3-1-0 overall) the victory. Augsburg goalkeeper Diana Bocklund (SO, Pine Springs, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) collected nine saves in goal.

Augsburg outshot the Falcons by a 6-4 margin in the first half, but the Falcons responded with an 11-3 shots advantage in the second half.

"Similar to the Luther game, we started well. We earned three quick corners in the first eight minutes but failed to score," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Overall in the first half, we possessed well and had the run of play. Unfortunately, we had a 15-minute stretch in the second half where they pressured well and we struggled to keep possession. River Falls found its goal in this stretch and were able to hang on for a hard-fought win."

Carly Reimer (SO, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) had four shots for the Auggies, while Courtney Gamrath (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) and Devon Ellena (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) had two shots each.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (9/11) at 7 p.m. with a nonconference game against the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at Edor Nelson Field.

"Give River Falls the credit, they played very hard; kept a clean sheet and disrupted our rhythm in the second half," Navarre said. "We don't have time to mourn though, as we play a very talented and experienced Dubuque team tomorrow night. Despite playing a very physical game, I'm confident we will recover quickly and play well tomorrow."
