BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College took a lead on an early goal, but the University of Dubuque answered with a goal in the 88th minute, as the teams played to a 1-1, two-overtime tie in a nonconference women's soccer game on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (1-1-2 overall) scored in the 26th minute, as
Bri Clark (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) finished off a long sprint from a pass by
Kelsey Sorensen (SO, Eden Prairie, Minn.) with a shot to the lower right corner of the net.
But Dubuque (2-2-1 overall) tied the game with 2:16 left in regulation, as Alexandra Watkins (FY, Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) put a shot high to the top right side of the net from 25 yards out off a feed by Sara Fassbinder (SR, Dubuque, Iowa/Whalert HS).
Goalkeeper
Diana Bocklund (SO, Pine Springs, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) and the defense kept the Auggies in the game, despite being outshot by a 26-14 margin, including a 12-4 margin in the first half and an 8-3 margin in the 20 minutes of overtime. Bocklund had seven saves in the game.
Head coach
Mike Navarre complimented his Auggies' effort against Dubuque, last year's Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff champions and an NCAA Division III national tournament participant.
"I'm proud of the effort, and yet I know the players and coaches all feel that we should have been able to close that game out," Navarre said. "Nevertheless, it's a respectable effort and result against an experienced team that was in the national tournament last year."
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a home game against St. Benedict on Tuesday (9/14) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
"Four games in, we've only conceeded two goals -- but we feel like we should be getting better results," Navarre said. "Hopefully, these tough nonconference games will prepare us for the MIAC matches. We start with a solid opponent in St. Benedict, so I'm expecting another exciting match on Tuesday."
