MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College dominated from literally the first minute to the last minute, claiming a 4-0 victory over Northwestern College-Roseville in a nonconference men's soccer game on Monday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (6-2-0 overall) outshot Northwestern (2-3-2 overall) by a 26-7 margin in the game, controlling possession throughout the contest. The Auggies had nine corner kicks to Northwestern's one.
Jeff Butler (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) put the Auggies on the board just 37 seconds into the game, rebounding home a goal following a shot from
Matt Bowman (JR, Maple Grove, Minn.). Butler also assisted on the last goal of the game for the Auggies, a rebound goal from
Gottlieb Uahengo (SO, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) in the 70th minute.
"We jumped out to a good start. I don't remember having an Augsburg team I have coached score 37 seconds into the game. That made it hard for Northwestern to really keep us in front of them. It was a good strike by Bowman and cleaned up with authority by Jeff," said Augsburg coach
Greg Holker. "Gottlieb's goal was similar to the chance he had at St. John's, so it was great to have him smack it in."
Augsburg struck three times in the first half-hour of the game.
Chad Gilmer (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season off an assist by
Josh Sweeney (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) in the 11th minute, and
Peter Loyd (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored off a corner kick by
Ahmed Gobana (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) in the 30th minute.
"Gilmer's goal was a little sloppier than the two Jefferson boys intended, but it paid off in the end with Sweeney slipping Chad in behind for the second goal," Holker said. "Loyd's goal off the corner was important for us, as it is the first goal we have scored in that situation -- and to wait eight games for that is unusual for an Augsburg team."
Augsburg was able to give many of its players valuable playing time in the nonconference match, as 25 different players saw action in the game, and 12 different players recorded shots.
Clayton Lynch (FY, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) recorded two saves in goal for his third shutout of the season for the Auggies. All six of Augsburg's victories this season have come by shutout.
Three different goalkeepers saw action in the game for Northwestern, with Josh Niedermayer (SR, Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) recording five saves, Kenny Francis (FY, South St. Paul, Minn.) recording three shots and Josh Olson (SO, Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea) recording two saves.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (9/25) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Macalester at Edor Nelson Field.
