MINNEAPOLIS -- Two former NCAA Division I women's hockey players will join the Augsburg College women's hockey coaching staff, head coach
Michelle McAteer has announced.
Carrie Holldorf, who played as a forward at St. Cloud State (2002-05) and Providence (2001-02), and Jody Horak, who was a four-year starting goalie at Minnesota (2001-05), will serve as assistant coaches this season for the Auggies under McAteer, herself a Division I player during her career at Minnesota-Duluth (1999-2003).
"I am very excited to have Carrie and Jody join the Augsburg coaching staff," McAteer said. "Both had successful Division I playing careers and both have captured national titles. They are great coaches and role models for our program."
After playing her first season at Providence (R.I.), Holldorf played three seasons at St. Cloud State, where she compiled 26 goals and 46 assists for 72 points in 101 games, the assist total 10th-best in school history and the point total 13th-best. In 19 games at Providence in 2001-02, she had seven goals and five assists for 12 points.
She was voted the Huskies' Most Dedicated Player in 2003-04 and served as a team assistant captain in the 2004-05 season. She earned Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week and U.S. College Hockey Online Player of the Week honors in the 2003-04 season.
Holldorf later played for the Minnesota Whitecaps professional team for three seasons (2005-08), serving as a team captain for two years. A native of New Richmond, Wis., Holldorf scored 185 goals and had 77 assists for 262 career points during her high school career.
After earning her bachelor's degree in marketing from St. Cloud State in 2006, Holldorf served as an assistant coach for the U-16 team at Shattuck-St. Mary's High School in Faribault, Minn., for three seasons (2007-10), with her teams going 123-21-16 in her three years. The team earned the USA Hockey national tournament title in 2009-10, while finishing as a semifinalist and quarterfinalist the two prior seasons. She also served as a strength and conditioning coach, girls' basketball assistant coach and girls' golf head coach at Shattuck-St. Mary's. She was also a volunteer assistant coach in New Richmond during the 2006-07 season.
"Carrie has tremendous experience, coming from Shattuck-St. Mary's where she helped their U-16s win a national title last year," McAteer said. "She's passionate about hockey and coaching, and will bring energy and determination on the ice and on the recruiting trail."
Considered one of the top goalies in the history of Minnesota's women's hockey program, Horak started 101 of her 105 games and compiled an 83-14-6 record, the most wins by any Gopher goalie. In her career, she had a .931 save percentage and 2,212 saves, with a 1.61 goals-against-average and 20 shutouts. Horak's 24 wins in 2004-05, 23 wins in 2002-03 and 22 wins in 2003-04 rank as the top three single-season win totals in school history.
Horak was a member of Gopher teams that won the Division I national title in her junior (2003-04) and senior (2004-05) seasons, while finishing third nationally in 2001-02 and fourth in 2002-03. The Gophers won the WCHA regular-season title three times in her career.
She earned second-team All-American honors in her senior season, while earning first-team All-WCHA honors in 2001-02 and 2002-03 and second-team All-WCHA honors in 2004-05. Horak was an NCAA All-Tournament Team recipient in 2004 and a WCHA All-Tournament Team honoree in both 2004 and 2005.
After earning her bachelor's degree in sociology from Minnesota in 2005, Horak served as an assistant coach at Centennial High School (2005-06) and Roseville High School (2006-10), while also serving as a hockey instructor for OS Hockey Inc. in Roseville. As a high school player at Blaine High School (2000-01), she earned All-State honors twice and was named Co-Metro Player of the Year by the Star-Tribune in 2001.
"Jody was one of the best goaltenders in the WCHA and is truly passionate about the goaltending position," McAteer said. "She'll be a tremendous asset and will work closely with our goalies and also recruit from Minnesota high schools. Jody is eager to contribute to the college game, and we are lucky to have her."
