DULUTH NEWS-TRIBUNE STORY
MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College women's hockey head coach
Michelle McAteer will be heading to the White House on Monday, as part of a recognition ceremony for her alma mater's national championship squad.
McAteer, who spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota-Duluth before accepting the Augsburg head coaching job in April, will be honored in Washington, D.C., along with the rest of the Bulldog women's hockey team, which claimed the NCAA Division I national title in 2010.
The Bulldogs will be among numerous Division I national title teams from the past school year that will be honored by President Obama at the White House on Monday.
According to a story in Wednesday's Duluth News-Tribune, the Bulldogs will fly to Washington, D.C., at 6 a.m. on Monday and be honored at the White House at 4 p.m. The team will return to Minnesota on Tuesday morning. The story noted that 20 members of the team, along with coaches and the school's chancellor will be in attendance at the ceremony. It's the fifth time UMD's women's hockey team has appeared at the White House.
McAteer spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with
Minnesota-Duluth, helping to lead the team to the NCAA Division I Frozen Four in both seasons, as well as
this season's national championship, the fifth in school history. She also served as a graduate assistant coach at UMD during the 2003-05 seasons.
Prior to returning to UMD, McAteer spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach with the
Vaughn Flames, a Canadian Women's Hockey League team in Toronto, and served as an assistant coach at
Harvard University from 2005-07. The Crimson advanced to the NCAA national tournament in both of her seasons at Harvard.
A native of Scarborough, Ontario, McAteer was a member of UMD teams that won national titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003, while also winning Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) regular-season titles in 2000 and 2003, and WCHA playoff titles in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
